Looking for an amp that can do those Rich Robinson Sting me type of tones at somewhat reasonable volumes (not looking for bedroom volumes).
Looking for tone like this:

That's back when he used Harry Joyce amps. I think he's moved on to Headstrong now. He's always had great tone.
For that sound I'd think a Mazerati GT if you're wanting to stay away from pedals, but it's loud. You might want to try a Rx Jr and a BB for a lower volume.

Thanks for the info. I know that RR is still using Harry Joyce amps along with 65amps Royal Alberts for playing live. Somebody just posted a pic on TGP from a live show a couple of weeks ago.

the thing about Rich is he is UNBELIEVABLY LOUD!! No matter what his amp. He has always pushed his gear. I always watched the Crowes for Marc Ford's side...because Rich was waaaaay too loud! Amazing band. Not what they used to be, though.

Maz Jr NR and a Z-Best cab loaded with 15 Watt Weber Alnico Silver Bells.
The SB's will bring out some of the Marshall flavor of the Jr and you'll be able to crank up the Jr loud enough to get some output drive/break up. If you need more gain hit the front end with a Xotic RC Boost or a Lizard Leg Flying Dragon. Put a nice Delay and EQ pedal in the FX Loop for solo's and you've got a very nice "3 channel" set up.

You are right about that concert footage, HOWEVER, the studio version of "Sting Me" that so many tonehounds love was recorded and played for many years after on a 1987 Marshall Silver Jubilee amp. I'm surprised nobody has suggested the SRZ-65 for this, as it is the amp in Z's lineup that can cop these tones. An extremely effective master volume on the SRZ allows you to get these tones at really acceptable volume. Now if you want the Harry Joyce tone (ie. Hiwatt tone), which is not the same as the juicy compression you hear on "Sting Me", the good Doc himself recommends the KT-45 (for "Live at Leeds" tone - Townshend through a pile of Hiwatts). This is a much cleaner brand of distortion. Cheers, Blair

You are correct - just saw them Sept 4 in Vancouver. Had a good view from the 3rd row center. Rich had 3 H.J. heads (only one appeared to be on) and the 65amp going as well. Cheers, Blair
