I just line up the notch on the tube with the notch in the socket, correct? It looks like it can go in a few different ways.

Yeah, the notch on the center pin has to line up with the slot for it. It will probably go in other ways - that would be bad.

It won't generally go in the "wrong way" because of the plastic locator pin. That's the big problem with breaking off the locator pin on octal tubes, I usually just throw them away unless they're really good tubes.

I've seen several reports here of folks plugging in rectifiers that actually seated with that guide pin out of the slot. It was not a fun experience for any of them. Apparently some newer manufacture rectifiers have a slightly smaller center pin, which means it can be seated the wrong way. You has to pay attentions!

I plugged a power tube in wrong in my Allen Brown Sugar. As soon as I played it I knew I blew a screen grid resistor. In 40 years of using tube amps I've never done that before. I think they aren't making the sockets the same as they used to. Since I knew what it was it was an easy fix but irritated me no end!

I had this happen on a power tube in a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. Center post broke off and I didn't realize it. Put it in backwards. Luckily it just kept blowing the fuse until I figured out what was wrong (3 fuses later!) LOL.
