I became the owner of a brand new Prescription ES head this afternoon.
Why did it take me so long to get turned on to this amp? I cannot believe how well it suits my style of playing.
The way in which I bought it is kinda strange. I have a gig this Friday in Vermont and I didn't have an amp. I had to get rid of my 2:90 that I was using with my Triaxis in order to afford my new Modulus Blackknife. I have a Soldano SLO on it's way to me but because of the holiday on Friday, it has been delayed 'til Saturday. I will not be here to take delivery of it.
So, I was in a panic trying to figure out what the heck I was going to do. My buddy has an old hybrid twin that I could use but I didn't want to. I called Alpha Audio here in Mystic CT and low and behold they had a new RXES in stock. I went over and grabbed it. I didn't play it until tonight at rehearsal. Holy smokes, what an amp. I have had two MazSrs, a Route 66, and a Galaxie in the past. I loved all of them so I figured I couldn't wrong with the RXES. I was right!!!!!!! I am head over heals for this amp - it's like I have had it for years!!!! I plan to use it this weekend and I am not hesitant at all about it.
Thanks for another incredible amp Dr. Z. This thing rawks!!!!! I will get a picture of it the next time it is home.

How do you compare it to the Galaxie? Do you prefer it over the Galaxie? What speakers do you prefer? I apologise if I sound fairly direct and straight to the point but I didn't want to beat around the bush as must admit I have thought about getting myself an RXES at times. Your opinion is appreciated greatly.

The Galaxie and I just didn't click for some reason. I loved the clean channel but the dirty channel was just too hard to tame. I sold it, and then about 4 months later, I found it and bought it back. I kept it for about another month and decided it had to go so I sold it again.
I prefer the RXES over the Galaxie for the reason I stated. If the Galaxie were just the one clean channel, I think I would have liked it better - honestly. I will never bash anything that the Doc creates. The Galaxie is a great amplifier, just not for me. It happens. I have only had the RXES for two days. I have used it twice at band rehearsal and I can tell you that I already love it. It has plenty of head-room and the tone stack is what you would expect from a Z. It's very interactive. I love the addition of the Overdose mode. It takes the tone that is already fantastic and makes it bigger and adds more gain. I haven't got it up into the 2 o'clock range yet but I imagine it's just going to continue to get larger. As I have mentioned, I owned 2 MazSr heads, a Route 66, and the Galaxie. Up until two days ago, I sincerely believed that the Maz series were the flagship of the collection. Now, however, this RXES is giving the Maz a run for it's money and may be pulling out in front. It's an amazing amplifier. Prior to buying it yesterday, I had never played through one. I had only heard sound clips here and on YouTube. I didn't even testdrive it at the store. I just went in there blind relying on my past experience with Z amps and what I had heard and read about the amp. Once I plugged into it, I knew I made the right decision. I am not regretting a thing with this amp. It's awesome.

Hi bilbal,
I appreciate your review.
What tube setup do you have in your RX ES?
Thanks, Billy11

Bill, how is the Rx honeymoon going? I remain surprised that I did not buy an Rx first. I went with the Maz Jr NR as my first Z for its range of tone and lower Wattage. I cannot imagine parting with it short of economic dire straits. But before I ever touched any Z amp, I surfed the web and listened to every Z clip I could find. What got me off my arse to go find a dealer was Skip Black's Hangin With the Doctor. I had to stop typing and listen to it again just now. That tone slays me.

I still have the RxES in the herd. It's a great amplifier. I started with a MazSr, then bought a Route 66. I used them together for about 4 months and loved them. Then, I sold the 66 and bought another MazSr. I used them for quite some time then bought the Galaxie. So I had the two MazSrs and the Galaxie for about 3 or 4 weeks until I sold one of the MazSrs. I then sold the Galaxie and bought it back about a month later. I then sold both and was left without a Z. Oh yeah, in the middle there somewhere, I bought a Fuchs Blackjack. I loved them all but they all ended up finding new homes. I went with an amp until traded a guitar for a Bogner Shiva. I liked it at first but then I ended up not liking it in the long run. Sold it and bought a Mesa Boogie Triaxis and 2:90 power amp and went back to the rack rig for awhile. That went and I bought the RxES, a Vox AC50, and loved them both. I still have both and I also just recently bought myself a Soldano SLO. So now I have all three. I was going to let the Z go but I will never be without at least one Z in my lineup. Presently I have the RxES at the studio, the Vox and SLO are both here and I have a Reinhardt 18 on the way. That should be here within a month. I am calling Tuesday to get on the list for Komet's new Komet 19 head. Tat will be here mid November hopefully. I also plan to get either a 66 or Maz between now and then. That's my story!!!!

EDIT: I have no idea what tubes are in my RxES. I will see the next time I am in the studio for rehearsal. I was thinking I want to replace V1 with a "dirtier" tube. I can stand to do without the headroom as I prefer a tone with some hair on it anyway. Any suggestions? I'm gonna start a new thread asking just that question.
