Thinking about trying my Z28 with a different cab and speakers. I have the 2x10 combo and I love it but am wondering if trying 12" speakers that are voiced for rock will give me some better heavy/high-gain tones.
I have no idea if the two things will work together in a pleasing way so I figured I'd as if anyone have and luck with v30's. FWIW, I used to have the Avatar 2x12 with the v30 and the G12H30 and loved it, but never had the chance to try it with my Z28.
Any thoughts?

I'm not a fan of V30's. I also tried one in my z28 combo and it just has this harsh piercing sound. For a classic rock tone the Greenback is the best - don't think you can get a modern high-gain tone out of the z28, but greenback with a good boost pedal is quite nice!

I have a Tonemaster 2X12 loaded with v30's and I love it. I also have an open back 1X12 with a Weber1225 (greenback) that work quite well too.

I took the stock (crap) speaker out of my Marshall DSL401 and replaced it with a V30 and have been quite pleased. I use my Z28 with a greenback cos' I like the breakup.

not sure about the Z28 but i had two v-30s in my Rx and with a few rooms it was great but most of the time their was the icepick through the brain effect going on. swapped one for a GH12 for a set up like you had in your avatar cab and never looked back. the other may go for a greenback someday. i ran my amp through a matchless combo's speakers with that combo in it and it killed. My Rx smoked the matchless too imo

Oh, I know the Z28 doesn't get heavy on it's own. I've got pedals to give me the necessary gain.
I'm just thinking the 2x10 isn't packing enough low end... or enough balls.
I've heard icepick/honky mids regarding the V30. I think G12H might be good. Greenbacks have somewhat low headroom, don't they? I don't think they'd be as "fast" or as solid in the low end as I'd want. Maybe I'm wrong...
Thanks for the suggestions! Keep them coming!

Z-28 with Vintage 30 ? I like it. I really like it. Alot. ;D While most of my play-time on the '28 is with the 210 cab .... I've always been happy with the results when I switch over to the 112 cab .... whether using my Tele, my Super Sport, Les Paul or even when I was auditioning the ES 335 it was making the sounds that I wanted to hear. I am by no means knowledgeable about all the different speakers available, however, I've had my 112 cab for over a year and have no plans to change anything about it. cheers always, eh Joel

the z28 through v30's in a well made 4x12 is really great. I love how the z28 gets along with that honky upper mid thing the v30's have. no ice pick at all for me. ymmv

I've got a 212 with a Greenback/ V30 clone (WGS Veteran 30) and it sounds fantastic with the Z-28. Brett

That ice pick effect went away completly after my V30 was finally broken in. No harsh, piercing highs at all now.
