Boy I think the Z28 is just me - love the Maz Jr., Ghia, and Galaxie (the Z's I own or have owned) but the Z28 is me. Now that we are playing the occassional large indoor venue (where I can run it through a 4x10s and remove the airbrake) and outdoor festivals sometimes I wish I had a bit more clean headroom. A 3 or 4 6v6 tube version of this amp would be great - how about a 4 tube 6v6 version that has a toggle switch to go from using 4 output power tubes to 2? Or am I crazy?
I really want a EF86 front end amp as these seem to take clean boost pedals the best (IMHO). Maybe I just need to add a Route 66 to aresenal per Brent's suggestion.

Adding a Route 66 is what I'd do...and probably will at some point. I've got some other stuff to use for big stages and outdoors, but the familiar front end of the 28/66 is such a comfort zone. Ditto on the Z28 "is me". Everything you need in one tidy little box.

I think a Z56 would be a great amp. The Doc has several EL84/EL34/6L6 amps now but only one 6V6, mind you I think he got the 6V6 amp perfect the first time ;D but a medium power version would still be sweet.

When that 4 tube 28 shows up, put me down for 1. That would be all the amp I would need, 4 tubes for max headroom, switch to change amp to a two tube set up like the standard 28 now and a half power switch to cut the power on the two tube config. down to 12-14 watts....now that would be a dream amp for me.... Maybe?

I've been holding off on getting Rt 66 for a long time, now since Doc is working on a new 4 6v6 prototype "Z-Plex", is that the same as the "CURT" ?,I might end up with one in the future.

I am curious how it sounds since it has a 12AX7 instead of an EF86 in the front end. The thing I like about the EF86s (in my opinion) like the Z28 and Rte 66 is they take a clean boost real well with out getting too grainy (retain the tone structure). It seems the Galaxie, Ghia, and Maz Jr get a little more grainy with a clean boost. I guess this is a function of the headroom in the EF86s - but correct me. Hey I have 5 Zs now, why not a 6th. Good thing we are playing 2, 3, or 4 gigs a week in the summer - gives me a chance to play them - and get a little money for strings and tubes

Why not just add another Z-28 to your rig? That really would be simply more of what you've already got and love. I love my Route 66 but it sound's nothing like a Z-28 to me. Very different amps IMO.
