I've seen this style used on EL84 tubes before but on my Z28 the clip is too long to actually contact any of the EF86 tubes that I have. What is the purpose of the clip on this tube, or are there longer versions of the tube?

Milo, I just looked at my head and it has a weird looking clip on the EF-86. I'm guessing that it would com in contact with tube but mine has black rubber shield and two of those vibration rings on it so I can't really see if it's touching or not...
Not sure if that was alot of help or not but that is what I see in mine.

Generally I've seen them on EL84s as tube retainers and they clip around the bottom of the tube to help hold them in (and maybe prevent a bit of rattle). At least on my amp it doesn't come close to contacting the EF86 and seemed kind of odd to have one on the socket if one of the shields might have worked better.

My combo has a clip and a rubber boot!

Does the clip actually contact anything? Maybe it was designed to fit a tube with the rubber boot and is too long for a plain tube.
I'm not real worried about, just curious as to why there is a tube retainer that doesn't fit.

Tube shields amplify the natural tendency toward microphonics in the EF-86, so we use the clip. They are cut shorter to fit the 86, but we put a shrink wrap cap on them. If you don't have the shrink wrap anymore, the clip is gonna be too long. Your best bet is to get some shrink wrap for it, if you shorten the clip to fit without it, you will probably notice it making more noise.

Thanks for that info. I bought the amp slightly used (less than a year old) and I thought that since it had a Dario in it that it was the original tube so I couldn't figure out the clip. Does any kind of heat shrink work for it as long as it's the right diameter to shrink to the tube?

I got mine used and there was no shrink wrap on the tube... I'll do this now. I'm glad this was brought up.

Yeah, the stuff we use is a little thicker than regular shrink tubing, but anything should work to dampen it a little.

Something else that I use are those little silicon tube dampers. They're a very cheap fix as well.
