I have an Rx ES head and have been playing it through a THD cab for a while. I still think it sounds pretty good, but I have to admit that the first time I played an Rx ES it was a combo with "greenbacks" in it. That is the sound I am looking for again. The problem is, I don't know if they were the Heritage G12M or Heritage G12H? They are both green and I didn't look close enough a year ago when I played it. I would think that they would be the G12H because of the high wattage rating but then again I suppose a pair of 20watt greenbacks powered by a 45 watt amp would yield pretty good results as well.
Does anyone have any input?

Usually when referring to Greenbacks you're talking about the G12M. If I'm not mistaken, those are 25 watt speakers, so a pair would be perfect for the RXES.

I suppose my next question is which "greenback", the Heritage 20 watt G12M or the 25 watt Classic G12M? The Celestion website isn't too helpful. They have 3 different speakers that look very much alike. How similar they sound is the question.

They have 3 different speakers that look very much alike. How similar they sound is the question. I posted this in the other thread - It is even more complicated than it first appears. There are four 12 inch "Greenbacks" in current production. In the "Classic" series there is the G12M 'Greenback' at 25W and the G12H at 30W. The street price of these run around $100 plus. I have checked a number of combos and cabinets at my local Dr Z dealer and many had the 25W flavor installed. And then there is the "Heritage" series G12M at 20W and the G12H at 30W. Yes, they have the same model name as the "Classic" series but go for around twice the price. This Guitar Player article from a few years ago may move you toward one or the other. www.guitarplayer.com/article/celestion-heritage-series/Sep-05/13164On the other hand, lots of folks around here will tell you that Weber has a better Greenback than the Greenback. The only thing standing between me and trying one of the Webers is a mountain of bills that want to be paid first.

I've never heard of Weber making a Greenback. I will have to look into it. The only Webers I have ever played through were in a 4x12 Orange Cab at Schreoder Guitar Shop in Chicago after having an amp rebiased. I think they were alnicos but the guys working there were not really sure since they didn't put the speakers in. I think it was the owners cab. They sounded pretty amazing. He also made a head for Nels Cline that I played through that day that was beautiful.
I think I am going to send the Dr. and email and see which ones he was putting in the RxES combos a year or two ago. It was probably the 25 watt Greenback and not the 20 watt Heritage Greenback but who knows. It all very confusing.
Thanks guys.

For the best Greenback tone I've heard outside of some vintage ones a friend owns, I heartily recommend the Weber 1225 with pre-Rola doping. Superb speakers that won't break the bank.
