I just got a Carmen Ghia head. I have a 2x12 loaded with Celestion G12-M70s. They are 8 ohm speakers though so I can only wire them as 4 or 16 ohms. My Ghia only has an 8 ohm output. What would be the best way to use the speakers? If it is any help I would like to maximize the headroom I am getting. I have a 12AU7 in V2 and it's pretty clean. Eventually I would like to try the 12BH7 as well. But if there is a difference with the ohms regarding this, I am leaning towards more headroom rather than more OD. Mainly I want to make sure that neither ohm load will damage the Ghia. I know these speakers are not that highly regarded - or don't seem to be. But, I don't mind them. I have had them for 15 years and they are well broken in Thanks for any help.

As a general rule you can go the same or more on the impedance load. By this I mean 8 ohm amp can go into a 16 ohm load safely but not 8 into 4.

Z has told me that the Ghia's with a single 8 ohm output can safely drive a 4, 8, or 16 ohm load. I believe this is due to the Ghia's rather robust output tranny.

I asked this exact question of Z quite a few years ago, and was told it was completely safe.
There may be a VERY *slight* bit of volume and headroom lost due to the impedance mismatch, but it's not even noticeable. I have run my Ghia with it's 8 ohm output into a 4 ohm load for years and never had a problem.

Hi all. Just discovered this board. I've had 4 different Z's since 1999. Guess I like em . Z told me during a phone call about 5 years ago that his favorite set-up with the Ghia is a mismatched impedence...a Z-Best 2x12...V30 and G12H wired at 4 ohms. If I recall correctly, he said that he gets earlier break-up using the 4-ohm cab. I've used a 4-ohm cab with my Ghia (8-ohm tap) many times with no problem. I like a G12M/G12H or Blue/G12H better than the V30/G12H, though. To each his own.

I think this question is more-or-less answered above, but just to be clear…
I’ve got a Ghia 2x10 combo. Is it safe to try switching the internal speakers from the 8 ohm jack to 4 ohm, just to see if it sounds cool or interesting?
And assuming it’s safe, has anyone tried this and liked the results?
Thanks, Brian
