I have Carr Mercury. It is an unbelievable amp. However I like my pedals every now and then so the drive settings are not needed for the most part (they really sound awesome but I like fuzz and overdrive mostly) and I would like a little more power than the 8 watt Mercury. I also am a Brad Paisley fan and REALLY like the fact that Dr Z has a forum here. I am very close to putting my Mercury on eBay and getting a new Maz Jr w/rev...well I will get the Maz then sell the Merc if I have to. Could anybody shed some light on my situation? 1.Could I play the maz jr quietly with my pedals(around bedroom level)? 2.Could I get good feedback using my fuzz w/maz jr? (the Carr does not feedback very well at all). 3.Could I get the big sound of the beginning of "All I wanted Was A Car" with a maz jr w/rev? Thanks. 3.

Yes, you can play the Maz Jr quietly with pedals. However, just like any amp, this will sound different than playing loud. The Mercury does not have a master volume (like the Maz) but it DOES have an 8-2-1/2-1/10 watt rotary knob. If you're playing REAL-REAL quiet, you may be constricting the Maz a bit too much. (such as 1/10th of a watt)
Will you get good feedback using a fuzz with the jr?
That depends. It depends on what speakers you're using, what guitar you're using, how loud you're playing and where you're standing in relation to the speaker cabinet when you want it. Some guitars just feedback better than others....especially semi-hollowbodies. My ES-335 is GREAT at feeding back at lower volumes....but I better watch out at full stage volume...especially if I'm using an overdrive. Even with the Mercury blasting at a full 8 watts, that doesn't seem like quite enough to cause feedback. (and by feedback we're talking about infinite sustain....not the screeetching high pitched squeal.)
Can the Maz Jr get the sound of "All I wanted was a Car"? Absolutely YES! But you'll need three things: a Tele, a slight amount of slapback echo....and a lot of talent.
However, with that setting with a Tele...even with a good fuzz, you'll find it hard to get 'feedback'. I suppose you could if you really set the fuzz to 'destroy'.

Some reassurance, I have been exactly where you are. I have owned a trove of different amps, including the Carr. Never quite found what I was looking for until I got my Maz Jr. I gig regularly (at least twice a week, some weeks 5 nights) and my Maz Jr handles everything. It is an incredibly versatile amp. Not to say that I wouldn't love to add a Ghia and a Prescription EX, but the Maz Jr is the best all around amp I have ever owned. As far as sound levels, you might have to wake the baby to get a full tone but you can play pretty quiet and it will sound great. I have the 2-10 combo which I love, but I wouldn't mind having a head with a couple of different speaker cabs. It is quite pedal friendly also.

Feedback usually requires a higher decibel level so at a super low volume it would be hard to get anything to feed back. But adding a compressor will get you there the quickest at low volume.

I put my Mercury on eBay and it is doing fine. I ordered an Rxjr redhead. I already have a Deluxe Reverb so I went for a totaly different sound. It may get here by the weekend. I got it from Midtown Music in Ga. That is where I got The Mercury. It shipped an hour after I bought it.

to me, the Maz junior is every amp you want or need rolled into one. It works great with pedals, without pedals, rack FX, straight into the input jack etc. Just gotta find find what works with it and what dont. Sometimes I cant make up my mind cuz that killer distorted tone is found in about twenty different ways and choosing the best is the hardest part!

I think you'll be *quite* happy with the Rx Jr. I have an RX-ES, amongst other Z's, and it's my clear favorite. I've spent some time with a Carr Mercury, and had trouble getting a tone out of it that I liked.
I hope you enjoy it.
