I figured since I went with all new outputs, I might as well tweak the amp a bit for the preamp goodies.
From KCA I bought a JAN 5AR4 (mislabeled 5V4) and an ANOS GE 12AX7 PI. (gee, that's a lot of capital letters!).
Results?
Subtle, but noticeable. The amp is warmer for sure-- smoother sounding, but still plenty bright if wanted. Best of all, these tubes will last a good long time and I won't have to piddle with anything but EF86s and output sets for a LONG time. Overall, worth the money IMO.
That "brittle" sound I was having is still there, but I'm finding I can play around it. I've decided it's the Blue-- it's either damaged or it's the natural sound of a Blue to be brittle with a very snappy guitar. My Zion strat is about the brightest sounding strat I've ever heard, even with fairly mellow pickups (ash body, birdseye top). It's practically a Tele on the bridge pickup.
I'll know more once I get my my other gear back. I get my gear back after I get a job. I have an additional interview tomorrow for a great job and it's looking good.
Stay tuned.
