Can anyone give me a run down of the tones you'd get with either? Which would be best for a RXES?

Depends what kind of vibe and what type of music you are playing. I played Azatplayers' RXES thru a few different speakers and I'm telling ya, it was spectacular thru a Marshall 4-12 with greenies. It had a great rock vibe, killer crunch and sounded very woody and sweet clean. Great thru the Z-Best too but there was something special about the quad I would imagine a closed back or open back 2-12 with greenies would sound pretty darn great. But if you are going for something a little smoother or sweeter, bit more boutiquey, hi fi, maybe alnico's in an open back is your thing. Bentop's clip of an RXES with a Celestion Gold is one of the sweetest clips I've heard. Very Very cool amp. I think you could have various speakers with this amp and have great variation to cover heaps of bases. Which kinda reminds me, "Why dont I have one? "

Hmmm....so maybe a Z-Best with Greenbacks is the answer? Or what about mixing speakers? I'm so lost on this quest! I have never messed with speaker cabs and speakers, so I don't really have a clue. When I tried out the RXES, it was with a Z 4-10, and it sounded really good, but was lacking a bit of the midrange that the 12s in my other amps.

I have many different speaker cabinets, and though I'm new to Z amps, My RxES sounds the best into a 4x12 greenback loaded cabinet. Helps to have a Zendrive in there as well.

I use my RXJS with a Z 2 12 w/ a Weber Blue Dog Alnico 30w and a Weber Silver Bell 30w and I really like it. I imagine that the RXES would sound killer with them as well. It has that alnico blue sizzle with the extra low end thump of the silver. I am tempted to get a 1 12 with a Gold whenever I get some extra cash, though........ Hey, I live in Gallatin, send me a PM if you'd like to try my cab out sometime.....

I guess I'll just give a cab a shot and see what I think. Can't really take you up on the offer to try it out though, I'm about to head home for the summer from college.

The quad of green power is without doubt a match made. I stupidly sold my quad... but i have an open back with 2 greenies that it still sings thru. But it really was special with the closed green love. Sounds pretty cool thru a single gold too, depends totally on the vibe you are aiming for.

For a country, southern rock vibe I like it with a C Gold or C-Rex in open back For rock I like it with g12h/v30 closed back, 4x12 green, or even a 4x12 of v30's. The v30 4x12 and an RX is great if you are getting in the heavy distortion range... I consider the Rx kind of a chameleon, it changes a lot with speakers used.
