I am currently waiting on the stangray with the 2X12 open back with blues. I am curious as to how this cabinet would sound with the maz 38 head. I played a gig last night with the maz and z best 2X12 cab and it was a struggle getting the volume under control and still getting a good tone out of the Maz. The design of the stage didn't allow me to get the cab anymore than about 2 or 3 feet behind me and I really prefer when it is atleast 6 to 8 feet behind me. Or even 10 if possible. I think alot of the problem is that the zbest cab is a long throw. The cab was quite loud at the back of the room yet on stage very quiet. So I"m wondering how good a match the open back 2X12 with blues would be for the maz head.

Just to add to this question. Would I be able to tame the Z best down somewhat by adding an airbrake? I do like the sound of the Z best cab but if the fact that it throws too much volume to the back of the room while being hard to hear on stage is a problem with it I'll be looking to replace it.

I had the same problem as some of the venues I play in the U.K.( small pubs ) have just enough space for a 4 piece band to set up usually in the corner of the room which incidently has the speaker cabs inches behind you. With a bit of experimentation I found the following to be the best for me. Using two 1x12 cabs ,a closed back on the bottom and a open back on top with the maz on top of the open back cab and I have found the beam blockers very use full for sound disspersion especially being so close to the cabs. I think its a case for you to experiment with different ideas to find out what suits you .

How effective are the beam blockers and do they alter the tone at all?

I gotta be honest ,I did'nt notice a difference in tone only a difference in volume perception if that makes any sense.the guys in band could hear better with the beam blockers fitted. It took me a few gigs for my ears to settle with the change. I tried a few gigs with them fitted and then took them off and I found it much better with the beam blockers . I use to struggle with hearing myself before but now I have found the beam blockers plus the fact I have 1 open cab to be the best changes I have made . the only problem I can see by using an open 2x12 cab maybe that it might be to much volume on stage for maybe the drummer if he is close by or any other musician for that matter.
