Forgive me if this is already answered, but I couldn't seem to find anything searching the forum. Has anyone done a back to back comparison of the Jr. using the Master to reign it in vs. an Airbrake? Is there any difference tonewise? I noticed that the good Dr. posted a while ago that the MV is an attenuating design, but in ruger9's review of the Jr with a Weber attenuator he mentions the amp sounding choked with the master turned down. I'm looking to order up a Jr. for my first Z, and am trying to weigh all my options.
Thanks!

for those who want to "catch up" on my review: drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=rxjr&action=display&thread=1192223645Don't misunderstand... the RxJR has an EXCELLENT Master Volume. I just feel that unless you get it up to at least 10:00-10:30 the amp sounds congested to me, like you're reigning it in far too much. At 10-10:30 it starts to open up & you hear the REAL Jr come alive. I prefer using the attenuator instead of the MV (even tho I was one of the people lobbying the Doc to put a MV on this thing) because it allows me to crank the MV (essentially making it a non-MV amp), and gets as much power tube drive into the picture as possible. I usually play with the volume around 6-7 (for a Paisley-ish drive), but I also play the RxJr with the volume cranked, and that is a SWEET sound indeed. (both with the MV cranked.) If I were currently gigging, I might be able to use the MV instead of an attenuator, but at home even the little 15W RxJr is just too loud (I'm not done building my studio yet), and quite frankly, I now understand why so many Z folks (and Z himself) prefer non-MV amps. Altho I would caveat that with "I love NMV amps WITH ATTENUATORS".

I'm a big fan of the MV - you don't have to worry about another piece of equipment (attenuator) at a gig and it is easy to deal with when you need more or less volume. I couldn't be happier with the MV's on my Maz Jr or Rx Jr.
I think the "choking" isn't from the position of the MV, but how much you're pushing the speaker. An attenuated non-MV amp sounds the same way to me when you get below a certain volume. With good tube amps you need to get them to a certain volume to sound their best - that's just how it is.
I had my MV quite low (maybe 9:00), but in the high input, volume all the way up, and overdose on with a Les Paul - it was rockin'! ;D

I've been using a Z-Brake with my RxJr. and a Les Paul for a few weeks now and am getting huge tone and the best natural rich sustain at very tolerable volume! I peg the Master volume, about 2:30 on the Volume, Low input and adjust via the Z-Brake
