Which rectifier ended up in the amp, the 5Y3 or the 5AR4? Also, I want to know how this amp does with a single Celestion Gold. This may be the next amp on my list if it pushes this speaker well.

A NOS 5Y3 GT rectifier.
A gold sounds great with the Rx Jr., as it does with most Z-Amps.

The MAZ 18 Jr uses a 5AR4 but the Rx Jr uses a 5Y3 GT?? I know they're not the same amp, and the Ghia uses a 5Y3, but that's not what I expected for some reason.....

Does not surprise me having heard that 'bounce' the RX Jr has, first thought for me after hearing the amp was "Alright!!!!!...A more controllable Ghia".

I think I've read it here somewhere on Z-Talk how Doc thought it was too much with the 5AR4 so he went with the 5Y3

Well, if there's one thing I've learned in the last 10 years it's "Trust the Doc". He knows what he's doing.

So, has anyone actually TRIED a 5AR4 in the RxJR? Curious what the result is... I'm guessing more headroom? What else?

I was just wondering the same thing today. I was also thinking about what a 5v4 would be like. Doc mentioned that he like them in his rectifier post. He said it was it between the 5ar4 and 5u4. I know if it ain't broke don't fix it, but........

hey che',, i am betting it would be like a ghia, you put a 5ara in one and it eats the power tubes quicker and sounds more marshally,, i used to have questions like that with some dr z amps, and i found it was probably best to just use what he has specified,, on the other hand, i heard dr z say that he had tried a 5u4gb in the new ezg-50 for awhile but then settled on the the 5ar4, so for that amp i am a little intrigued,,,, i dont really want more headroom or anything else in my rxjr, it is just right.

I emailed the Doc re the rectifier when I bought my Jr because the website wasn't clear re the difference on the Jr and the RXES as far as tubes, with the exception of the EL84s. He replied immediately stating the 5Y3 must stay in it. I replaced the stock one with a Mazda 5Y3 then a Bendix - both sound great but so much for tone altering with the rectifier. He did not give a reason.
