Carl Verheyen (killer player ... more recordings and commercials and TV shows than you can count, Super Tramp and the Carl Verheyen Band) just returned from his Europe tour a few nights ago. He is now going back in the studio and will be using my Ghia for these sessions for a new CD and for work for other artists. Carl is planning to order a Carmen Ghia combo but needed a Ghia "NOW" for his sessions. Carl is a pretty amazing player. You have heard him whether you realize it or not. A great DVD should be out about now too that was done by the same folks that did the Allman Brothers DVD that was done in NY. Anyway .... more on Carl at www.carlverheyen.comKeep an eye out for his latest CD. Killer player.

It's good to see another professional of his caliber step up to the Dr Z line! Maybe this will lead to bigger things (KT 45, Rt 66, Maz Sr, etc) he can take on the road for live gigs.
On another note Myles, what amp is your buddy Jimmy M using on his reunion tour? I'd love to get out and see them.

Jimmy is using three Fender Tweed Bassmans that were supplied by Fender. The center one is his overall sound and the left and right amps are for his stereo effects. There are some hand traced tubes in the center amp. Kenny Loggins is using two Fender Hot Rod Deluxes but I have different tubes in the gain stage of each of the two amps which are different to give more of an open tone. This is sort of like using to slightly different speakers in the same cab .... it keeps things from sounding too "mono". If you look at the back of the amps there is green duct-tape with some of the specs on the tubes noted so the crew can replace tubes with ones of the same spec and not have things change. Kenny goes for a more gainy tone than Jimmy. There is a bit of an issue with stage volume as Kenny's amps could be cranked up even a bit more but are already pretty loud on stage. The solution proposed here is the use of an Air Brake in each of Kenny's amps mounted inside the cabs. This change is in progress. The Los Angeles show was great. The sound company is called OSA ... On Stage Audio. They may be some of the best sound guys I have ever watched work or listen to. The head guy named Mario was really a master on the FOH desk. If I ever have any say so when playing at a large venue these are the guys I'd want for sure!

Carl may be a pretty fantasic player but on top of that he is an amazing guy which can be sort of rare. I will be talking to Carl about a 6545. Carl really wants a Ghia combo and that is no big surprise (everybody needs a Ghia), but now I am trying to address his touring issues. Carl's favorite setup is a Fender Twin Reverb, Vox AC-30, and two Marshall half stacks. The problem with this setup is that his amps are vintage, in great shape, and really too valuable for touring. He and his band just finished a Europe tour but will be doing a British Isles tour soon. Carl is an endorsee for THD and the Flexi 50. Nice amp but has a particular sound that is great for some things but unfortunately Carl has something of an unlimited box of styles and techniques. I will be talking to Carl about considering a 6545. I think I can get his "Marshall" tones out of one side of the amp and give him all the clean headroom he needs for "Highland Shuffle" from the 45 side of the amp. When Carl plays clean he prefers to actually hear the amps on stage rather than rely on in-ears. This means a lot of clean headroom and my KT-45 (or the 45 side of a 6545) has as much clean headroom at pretty high levels as my own Twin Reverb. The 45 side is also more pedal friendly than a Twin Reverb and Carl has a nice pedal board rig. So ... in the end .... the 6545 would be a great performance amp for him, and would make my life a lot easier than trying to keep four other vintage amps running well.

I saw L & M way back in the "olden day's"...one of the best concerts I ever saw....Love Messina's playing style...I use my fangers fer pickin' too Saw L & M in August '71 at the Hollywood Bowl, opening for the Allmans. At the time there had been more talk than substance in the new country/rock fusion. Messina's lead Tele playing really got my attention. I remember thinking, "This is it, the real deal."
