I'm getting a weird noise that sounds like paper tearing when I play 'A' notes on my Route 66 - I thought it might be a speaker problem at first, but I plugged in my Ghia to the same cab and there were no issues whatsoever.
Any ideas what this might be?

Weird Noises?? TAKE SOME LESSONS!!!! ---------------- But seriously... Could be tube rattle? I had that problem with my 66. Do you have any spares you could plug in? (both power and preamp) Also when it does this rattling...is the head on top of the cabinet? That made my rattling worse.

I had a really whacko noise one night from my 66, when I played certain notes it would buzz and rattle and make all sorts of racket I thought I had blowed it up! Turns out the socket on the back of the cabinet was loose! Phew! Check everything, even the weird stuff.

I've had noises like this from my 66 before. It was a loose power tube. More than any other amp I own, the KT66's seem to move around in the sockets. I think because they are so tall and have no retainers it causes a greater moment of force at the base. I tightened the tube sockets and the noise disappeared. Be sure you are comfortable with discharging the filter caps before you retension the sockets or it could be a very shocking experience!

So, I put the amp on a stool and the noise went away - must be a sympathetic vibration in the amp. I'm going to look into getting those fancy tube spring/retainers that I see in a few other 66s for the power tubes....perhaps that will help when I need to put the amp on the cab.

Good to hear it's a simple solution. I've heard from other forum members that the doc prefers not to hang the RT66 amp upsidedown in a combo. Probably due to vibrations? Gotta keep those good vibrations happening... (shameless Beachboys quote).
