Possibly a newbie dumb question, but help would be much appreciated! I've just got a lovely new mazerati. For now I can't afford a cab to go with it, so I'm going to use my marshall 2x12 combo as a cab. The speakers are unpluggable, see pic: The lead is not quite long enough to plug into the mazerati, so I'm going to have to make a new one. The exisiting lead has brown going to + and blue going to -, but the problem is as it's moulded I don't know which is connected to the centre of the 1/4 inch pin and which the outside. Any ideas? Also, the two speakers are 8 ohms, so I should be using the 16ohm output on the mazerati, right? Thanks!!

Hi Neil, if I were you I'd just pick up a female to male speaker cable and not mess with making a new cable. Also, I can't tell by looking at the speaker wiring if it's series or parallel. 2 8ohms in series = 16 ohms. 2 8ohms parallel = 4 ohms. What does the jack say where your plug it in normally when using the combo?

you might be right... I think it's in series. Basically there's a wire from the + of one speaker to the minus in the other, and then the output from the amp in split + to one speaker and - to other.

Radio Shack carries the adapter.

Yep, that series. If it was parallel it would just go in a circle. + to + & - to - . If the Maz has a 16 ohm output you should be just fine.

It actually doesn't matter which way around you drive your speakers - unless you're using two amps and need them to be in phase.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated. I couldn't get an extension chord so I've made a new cable out of a PA speaker cable I had. I've got rehearsal tonight, so I finally get to put my Mazerati through it's paces. I'm a bit paranoid about blowing a transformer halfway through, so I've been checking and rechecking the ohms!

The standard practice is to wire the "+" wires to the tip of the jack, and the "-" wires to the sleeve. Check out these diagrams. It should clear up any confusion. www.avatarspeakers.com/wiring%20diagrams.htmHave fun Harold

Best way I've found is to get a 1/4 to 1/4 'barrel' adaptor at Radio Shack. (Or Maplin's;^) Plug the existing cable from the Marshall into it and put a long speaker cable into the other end, you're done.
