This is my first Z amp, and I've narroweed it down to either a Maz 18 or Maz 38. I tried the 18 and liked the nasty drive when you crank it up. I have not had a chance to try the 38 though.
How would you compare the 2 in terms of the following categories?
a) Volume; is the 38 twice as loud at the 18?
b) How does the crunch sound when you crank up the 38 compared to the 18? As stated in the above paragraph, I found the 18's crunch to be very raw and nasty which is very much to my liking.
c) I am thinking of getting a boost pedal, do any of the 2 have a better response to boosts?
d) I am looking for a nasty angus young/joe perry overdriven sound. A stack is not practical, so which of the 2 do you guys think will best serve my needs.
Thank you very much and please excuse my ignorrance in this area. I have yet to have a budget to afford a high quality amp, so this is all knew to me.

Having previously owned both, I'll take a stab at helping you. You mention several times wanting nasty and raw...this apparently makes the selection easy, because that is exactly what the Jr is. The Sr is much more refined and smooth.
Personally that is why I prefer the Sr...you've got the smooth (listen to BW's clip on Mayall's "Sen Say Shun"), and you can still get it pretty raw with a good OD pedal...not to mention more kick, thump, and head room (not twice as much though, to answer your question). But as I get older and my ears less responsive, I NEED such things! ;D
Good luck and enjoy your new amp, whichever you choose.

I'm with Bill here. After owning both I'd say a Jr NR.
The best Angus tone I have pulled with a Z was a Jr NR head into a Z best cab (V-30/G12H) with a Bastardized Tele with a Duncan "Lil 59" bucker in the bridge, nailed the classic rock Gibson/Marshall tones at reasonable gig levels.
Remember, the NR has more gain and I think that's the one for you.
Good luck, Curt

Thank you very much for your feedback, it is much appreciated.
I'll let you guys know what I decide on after I try the 38 and the fulltone pedal too.
Thanks again!

Is there any difference in sound between the 1 by 12, 2 by 12, or head with 2 by 12 cabinet?

Yes there is a difference. I tried a lot of different versions of the Maz Sr before I bought mine and they all have a slightly different characteristic. My advice is to go with a head/cab setup so that you can mix and match different cabs depending on the size of the room your playing in. Play a Maz Sr just to be sure, but I'll bet you end up with a Maz Jr NR and that's a killer amp. Good Luck, Jason

I use the Maz Sr NR head and have a half dozen different cabs to work with, works great for me, wouldn't have it any other way.
