I know some amps you can run them at 16 ohms into an 8 ohm cab to get more breakup and lower the overall volume. Is this possible with the Rt 66, would it be detrimental to the amp, if not what would the result be? Thanks.

I'd like to know as well since I've got this brand new 66 sitting here that loves to be played at 3 O'clock on the volume dial.

I have a rock gig this weekend and I don't see a clean sound on the list. I really wanna try this but I don't want to stress or damage my amp. If I hear nothing I guess I'll just airbrake.

Generally not advisable to run a cab lower impedance than the tap on the amp. Wears tubes out faster. Running a 16 ohm cab on an 8 ohm tap will lose a few watts but sound will be compromised a bit but it's safer. It'll sound better to just use the proper impedance match and an Air Brake or other attenuator, down a click or two.

Thanks Billy, I know some amps with "overbuilt" transformers allow this and I reckon the 66 falls into that catagory but I think I'll just crank it and airbrake for this particular gig. I'd hate to fry my very expensive valves!

Good question Tas. The 66 does have that rather large transformer? Although damaging an output trans would be costly and a new one will probably alter the tone, for better or worse??? BTW: sorry to hijack your thread does anyone know more about the 66 changing production transformers, i.e. why and what different...

You can run a 16 ohm cab from the 8 ohm output on your amp, but not the other way around. It is worth a try as the amp is working harder to push the 16ohms and you will lower the sound level and get an earlier breakup. You have good ears and know what you want to hear.... give it a try and let us know your thoughts.

I know of some people who run their Germino classic 45 at 16ohms into an 8 ohm cab for more dirt less volume, and since they are both KT66 amps I just wondered if it was possible. I certainly wouldn't try it unless I received a resounding yes from an expert...just thought it was worth asking. I don't want to risk anything with the amp or my expensive valves.

OK, I misunderstood...People are running their 8ohm combosat 16ohms into an 8 ohm extension cab.
