Sorry if this has been covered before. Anyone familiar with both of these amps, how would you describe the difference in sound? How about the headroom, or how far you can turn up the volume before overdrive? Obviously the controls are different. I'm not much into overdriving amps, and prefer the clean sound. So I'm not sure if the master volume is critical to me. I'd appreciate hearing any comments, or pointers to existing threads on the subject. I have a Stangray, which I am in in love with! I'm starting to 'get' the Tone & Cut controls, so I'm OK with the single knob control. Now I'm curious about what's in the Maz. I got the 1x12 combo and have thought about getting a lower wattage head & a cab to add, for more versatility. I have heard the Maz Sr, which sounded great. I may not be lucky enough to hear a Ghia and a Maz Jr. in the same room. Thanks in advance.

The Maz will have more headroom, and more flexibility overall. If you dime the volume on the maz and use the high input you can come close to the kind of sound the CG gets when its volume gets above 1 O'Clock. The CG has a more Marshally tone as its volume gets pushed up and it saturates very nicely. To me its the kind of amp that you can open up the volume control quite a bit, then control the overdrive from the guitars volume knob. If your clean is covered by the Ray, then I'd at least audition a CG for overdrive tones. Either amp would sound nice next to the Ray.

+1 on the Maz Jr for givin' you flexibility. however, if you are cool with minimal controls then the Ghia is an absolute charm ;D just my .02 - that's why I got the Ghia and the 28 heads and a couple of cabs to match. cheers, eh! Joel

Hey Joel, let's say you had a Maz Jr head and was GAS'ing more more Z. Would the CG or the Z28 be calling you more? That's where I am right now. I was thinking Z28 and a 1 x 12 with an old school Greenback would give me greater variety. Of course the latest post from Mike about the bunch of new models coming has muddled my GAS quite a bit.

Interesting question, as I had the 28 first, then got the Ghia and am now contemplating either the Maz Jr or Galaxie. as for cabs - I like my 1x12 with greenback and I like my Z 2x10 cab. my ears, like my playing, ain't always tuned in for all the subtle-ties and finesse (revealed thru speaker swapping ... yet) ;D cheers, eh! Joel p.s. just realized I definitely gave an indefinite answer

The clean sound of the Ghia is excellent, great for blues. Hard to beat the Ghia tone for a low wattage amp.

I've now had my Ghia for about a month and a half now. They're both great and fun amps. If you're more into clean, I would steer you towards the Maz Jr. I think that part of the Ghia's charm is how it breaks up as you push it more.
