Can any of you guys give me a reason to get a NR Maz 18?
All of my amps in the past have had reverb. I don't really use much of it. I prefer delay. And when you need a good crunch I feel it just mucks things up. However, it's always nice to have just in case.

It depends on what amps you've used in the past. I have a Fender Blues Jr. that I always use a little verb on because it is so dry and "1 dimensional." But the my Maz Jr doesn't need it because there is more character to the tone. If I want a little "something" I use some delay. It has also been said the the NR is a little more agressive than the reverb model.

Yeah, I use to have a Fender BlDlx. I used a bit of reverb, but not much.
When people say more aggressive to they mean it breaks up earlier? I do need some clean headroom.

NR ,Simpler the better.
You can always add reverb later as a pedal if you miss it. I had the same dilemma when I bought my Maz 38 NR. Then I worried about using a reverb pedal through the fx loop.
In the end, I have a touch more gain in the NR, and a trex roomate that sounds best in front of the amp.............and certainly as good as the on board reverb. JMO

If your looking for more gain, then the Maz Jr NR is the way to go. More gain without the verb and you can crank the Jr more than the Sr. I've got Verb on my Sr and I love it. But I'm using that amp for clean Voxish, Super, and Plexi tones. Having the reverb and clean headroom was a must for the first 2 and the amp has enough gain to get into the Plexi territory for me, I can always use a pedal if I need more. The Maz amps are just amazing.

Thanks guys.
I'm trying to get into Voxish territory. Does NR help or hurt this effort. I know speaker choice is a big factor...probably go with a blue. I can't remember if an AC30 comes with reverb.

If you hardly ever use it, why pay extra for a feature you don't need?
And if cost isn't the object, why add a layer of complexity (& and extra tube) to the signal path?
There are plenty of great reverb effects that will sound fantastic through the NR's (included) fx loop.
And IIRC, the Vox does come with...
Either way, you'll be getting a great sounding amp! :-)
Hope that helps.

I'm off to play some Z's this Friday. That's really the only way to know, but they probably won't have every conceivable Maz Jr. at the shop so I thought I would ask around here.
Thanks guys.

For what its worth, all my amps have had reverb, i tried a jr without it, It sounded awesome but quickly went dry, i was expecting a lil bit the reverb adds. I use very lil anyways. Holy grail is a decent pedal, i had 1 with a budda 18w, just another thing to hook up

I have the NR Head, and the 2x10 maz with verb. The NR is more open sounding, louder etc, but I seem to be taking a preference to the reverb model of late. I can dial in my tones faster and the sound is a little smoother overall. If you want a sweeter amp the verb model is the one, if you want more open with a more raw kind of sound, try the NR. It seems that the NR version is about 25% louder.

Kledbet +1 That's a great description. I also really like the Z verb. Just remember that your making that signal path a LOT longer with 2 guitar cables and a reverb pedal compared to a reverb unit built into the amp. I think you'll love the Jr either way.

I know I don't want to add another pedal to my existing chain. I like to keep it simple.
Thanks for the description P4J and kledbet...that really helps. 25% louder is not what I need. And I guess I would prefer a smoother sound. Hmmm, verb maybe the way to go.
I'm off to play some Z's tomorrow!
Thanks for the help guys.

I like my Maz with verb . I only crack it open to wet it a little sometimes . There if I want it and IMHO doesn't complicate an amp , verb has been part of most amps for 50 years .

I have a NR 2x10 combo and I love it. I've played a Sr with verb and it rocked too. Either way you win. It's a great amp with or without.

You just can't beat a Maz Jr or Sr. It's just so versatile. It respeonds well to tube swaps and sounds great through any cab you match it up with.

1. Jr has more attitude. Just gainier all around, less clean headroom/more grit all the time, and more natural mid content than the Sr.
2. Verb, it's a taste thing. I like dry signals - cut through better in a mix. Though, it's nice to be able to add a little verb for certain material or gig situations when necessary. As mentioned, the Doc's reverb setups are stellar!!
3. If you're wanting more Vox, the Sr. has a bit more of that flavor but you can get in the ballpark with the Jr.

I played a 2X12 with verb yesterday. My first Z experience. All I can say is wow! It as much of an amp as what you guys say around here. I just have to convince my wife to let me spend that much on an amp!
Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll end up with a Maz 1x12 w/reverb. At least for now that's what I'm aiming for.

You have made the right choice regardless . You may want to consider the 2X10 or 2X12 combo as well or a head/cab rig so it's lighter to haul or gives you more speaker options , I know if I go for a EZG-40 , it will be a head . Don't tell the wife , just sneak it in while she is not home and when she asks where it came from just say.... "I've had that for months now , didn't you notice ? " ....hehehe Keep an eye too for used in our equipment for sale or post a WTB , you can usually find a good deal on here from the good members of the Z forum ;D

Yeah, the wife handles the finances as she should or we would be broke! I'll keep my eye on the WTB board. Probably the best way for me to go.
