The most amazing amp I ever played was on Friday during my lunck break. I walked into a local music store here in richmond, va, it was the 18w jr. My salesman asked me to demo it for a customer and they bought the 2/10 version. I have a peavey classic 30 that does well. My questions are..I hear its a awesome strat amp and thats what I demo'ed thru, But I play a prs and a strat I built with Anderson pickups. I play hi energy christian rock/blues based, hi gain and of course lots of clean stuff, will this be a good humbucker based amp? and The peavey has a awesome gain channel, so what pedals? would I need?. I have a keely tube screamer and a BD-2. I like the Gary Moore, "Still got the Blues" tone, but not on all songs tho of course. Its alot of money and I just sold a Budda 18w, too big and no reverb. Any comments are open and welcome, Dont get me wrong, We dont play metal but I have always used the amps distortion, 2 channels, not used to a 1 channel. Im 51 years old, been playing since I was 8, you know, Im kinda stuck in my ways, But I spent 20 minutes plugging into every amp in the store and there was no comparison to the tone, Thanks

I'm 51 and been playing since I was 13 and I have several vintage Blackface amps and the Maz 18 is at the top of my arsenal. It takes pedal very well too. I use mine at church all the time. I use strats and for drive I use a Tim or a Timmy or a BB Preamp. I like a delay out front too. The Keeley TS-9 mod plus is a grat tube screamer too and it works well with the Maz. Here's a pic of my board drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=maz18&action=display&thread=1168701222

will this be a good humbucker based amp? Good? No. It will be a GREAT humbucker based amp. If you're used to a two-channel amp you'll probably want either an OD or Clean Boost pedal. The choices are endless and I've yet to hear one that didn't sound good with this amp.

"Will this be a good humbucker based amp?" Oh yes, yes indeed. I use single channel amps w/pedals for drive 'channel' settings. Stacking the Keeley BD-2 and the TS-9 is a great idea - can have clean (no pedal), light grit (BD-2), med grit (TS-9) and a great lead tone (BD-2+TS-9). Also, can use the BD-2 light grit as a nice lead boost for a clean amp. I use mine with PRS McCarty and a LP Junior w/P90's when there isn't a Tele or Strat plugged in. Here's a link to Jayson Chance's (JChance) Soundclick page - there are some great clips of BD/TS/Hum Guitars into a Jr. www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=465770

Just got back from church as a matter of fact and I used the Maz today with that board and a Tyler super strat with a Humbucker in the bridge. It was wonderful.

Is the name Strat synonomous with @stratocaster, and if so, what is that guitar? Is it a Fender? Who owns the rights to both names, and when is a Strat something other than a Strat? Just wondering...

What a great question P4jc. I'm in the exact same predicament. Just had my amp stolen (at church) so I'm in the market for new one. I play a keely moded T-S9 and loved the OD tone I was getting. I put it in front of a DRRI and it's not the same.
I'm going to shop around locally, but there are no Z dealers here. Probably try Mesa, and Bogner, but I really want to try a Z. Just reading what these guys have to say is so convincing! I'll to make a trip to Lexington, KY, to hear a Z.
Let us know what you do.

95strat, I had 3 mesa's f-30,f50 and a older 1, cant remember now, dont bother unless you are playing veryyyyyy loud for the f-models. Rhey go from a whisper to too loud and dont sound that great, believe me, im 51 years old and had 'em all, just order a 18w and the clearest tones youve ever heard will be there, just use a pedal or 2 to get the distortion you want. Think of the most sweetest tone a clean amp can produce and you wont go wrong, get a zvex box of rock and a tube screamer, use the volume knob, it will be another deminsion

Thanks for the advice. Meas has never been my first choice. I just don't play loud, and I'm not in love with the OD tone. However, I'll just go out and play around. I can play a Z around here, but I really think that's what I will end up with. Let me know what you end up with. Sounds like we play similar styles.

First off 95 strat, that sucks. I don't know what else to say. The Maz will make a great replacement for the DR, I have a 66 and it stays home.
Strat is a generic term for all Stratocaster guitars and their clones. I play a Suhr and a Tyler, these are both "strats" but beat a Strat at it's own game. Much as the Maz 18 beats a DR at it's own game.
IMHO

Yeah, I'm all for the Maz. I'm sure that's what I'll end up with. Just need to decide on speaker choice.
1x12, 2x10 Celestion V30, Blue???
I've been playing a Fender BlDx for years. I'm looking for a differnt sound. A moder/vintage sound (does that make since?). Kind of leaning toward the Vox sound. I like a chimey clean and a good mid punch for the OD side of things.
I've been playing a DRRI, but the scooped mids kill my Keely TS-9. Kind of SRV, but not really. The good thing about the BlDx was it had mids. Sounds like the Maz can do all of this and more.
Got to go play one!

You'll like a Maz jr better than a Deluxe, no problem

when does the amp gain (distortion) start in with the Maz Jr. ? Can one play with gain at "bedroom" volume?

I am ready to buy a MAZ Jr. any minute . . . help me decide why? I have a Mini Z, Marshall, Suhr, CAE, Bad Cat, Bogner, Cornford, THD and Aiken . . . but something seems to be missing . . . could it be a MAZ JR 18 ?
