Put a post in the TUBES section but no one has answered my question. I would like a little more clean sound out of my MAZ JR. I have done some reading on the boards here about 12at7 tubes being used in the PI slot to increase headroom on a MAZ JR. Should I use a 12AT7 in the PI spot or some other type of preamp tube such as 12ay7 or 5751? But I have another question regarding how changing out the PI spot with another tube will affect the amps tone. Will it make the amp warmer sounding, and how will it affect bass mids and treble? Also, other than increasing headroom, what will I loose tonewise by utilizing a 12at7 in the PI slot. Thanks for the help, I am interested on learning more about this

Remember the bottom line is try ity and listen. Back to your question, try a good triple mica 5751 tube then try a 12at7. They are similar but not exactly the same. My advice is the 5751... but like I said use your ears.

Tried a 5751 (GT-5751M) in the first preamp tube position V1 and must say that it has tamed the highs on my MAZ JR a bit, as it has made the highs sweeter and not so piercing. The bass sounds a bit tighter as well and not so flabby. I like the effect. Sounds a bit more Fendery. Will experiment tommorrow and put the 5751 in V2 and will also try in V5. BTW what do you guys think of the Groove Tube version 5751? I am assuming this is a repackaged Sovtek.

A SS rec plug will perk up the output a bit and tighten the low end as well. If your looking for more clean head room; Have you dimed the master?
A speaker can make a huge differance, if you have a 1x12 combo likely you have a G12H..stuff a Tonker in there.
I play in a pretty loud setting and the Jr has all the head room I need.

I used Low input and Maxing the Master and using the volume like a non master amp to get MUCH more clean headroom for a stock Maz Jr or Sr… speaker swaps, and pre amp tube swaps will help further your cause…
BUT… biggest difference in clean headroom I found in the JR is when I put a spare NOS rectifier I got from Mike at KCA I had in my new Maz Jr and BIG difference in headroom and overall volume than a standard JJ/sovtek... big, tight... no need to change any of the pre tubes... I’m loving it…
If I'd had and tried that NOS rectifier in the first Maz Jr I used to have, I may not have gotten rid of it because I couldn’t get enough clean headroom out of it… BIG difference and I did actually have a NOS Mullard rectifier in my Maz SR I could have popped in the Jr to try it out if I had known then what I know now…
