CAN THE MAZ 18 GET THAT PLEXI SOUND LIKE THE 20 WATT RE-ISSUE MARSHALL HEAD? I NOTICED THE MARSHALL CABS ARE USING G12H30 AND EL84 TUBES. SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE EASY TO GET IT CLOSE.

Yes it can.
Your caps lock is stuck on, friend.

I'll second that.
Took my Maz Jr 1x12 G12h into the shop and A/B it with RI 20 watt Marshall Head and 2x12 cab. I was surprised to hear the similarities between the two. The Maz could nail the Marshall attitude very convincingly, but it also had a beautiful chime that the Marshall didn't.
Both very fine amps...My money is on the Maz...It just sounded better to my ears.

Hey guys!
I have not played a 20 watt Marshall but I was curious where you had your eq settings to get your Maz sounding similar?

I've gotten Fender Deluxe-y sounds by cranking the Master, killing the mids & cut, & adjusting the treble & bass to taste.
Marshall-y sounds are almost the opposite, although keep the cut down here too.
Hope that helps...

The 20 watt Marshall uses solid state rectification so getting a Weber Coppercap or equal would make the Maz 18 stiffer and sound more like the Marshall, only with the benefits of a good master volume and real tone controls.

How would you guys set the tone controls for the Plexi tone? Is it safe to use the Weber Coppercap with the Maz 18?

I think I remember that the SS rectifier is not recommended with the EL84 amps.

The current AC15/30 custom classic amps all have solid state rectifiers though?

The Marshall setting is all tone knobs dimed, preamp and power amp to taste, and cut around 9 o'clock or so.

The Maz can do the 18 watt plexi thing, but more tastfully in my opinion. The Maz is alot more tonally rich than the 18 watt marshalls. They are cool, but the Maz would definitely be my pick.

I have only played one of those Marshall 18 (or is it 20??) watt heads, and didn't like it at all. I actually have an original Marshall 18 watt 2x10 combo, which has as good a "Marshall tone" as any Marshall I've played, big, small, old, or new. It's really an amazing little amp. When I decided to buy my Maz Jr. I wondered if it would sound anything like the old Marshall. Well, it doesn't sound anything like it at all!! I've not really ever felt it sounded like the Marshall once since I got the Maz Jr. 2x10 some months ago. The old Marshall 18 watt 2x10 is a completely different animal then my Maz Jr NR 2x10. I'll have to go back to the Maz Jr and see if I can get some Plexi tone out of it!!! Here's the Marshall;

Now that , my friend , is one cool old amp. But I couldn't live without my Maz. But I wish I had that Marshall as well!!

Thanks.......I'm lucky I found that one.
The marshall can not replace the Maz Jr NR 2x10. The Maz Jr NR 2x10 can not replace the old Marshall.
Two great amps. Just different.

I mailed Brett from Z Amps and this was his suggestion:
Turning it up is always best for a plexi like sound. Here's a good setting to try: Vol:3:00 Treble: Full up Middle: Full up Bass: 11:00 Master: 3:00 Cut: 12:00 to taste depending on the guitar. Plug into a Celestion H30 too. Give it a try and play it like it's a plexi!

Yeap I've got a UA to control the volume. Also have an Airbrake but thats up on eBay...!

I own both a Maz Jr 18 NR w/Blue and a Marshall 18 watt 1974X. The Maz can come close but does not nail that fully saturated Plexi sound. The Maz Jr is an excellent amp just different than a Marshall... also close but different from an Vox AC15. The Max Jr is a more flexible amp than either the 1974X or AC15.

I owned the 2061x Marshall 20 watter (solid state rect) and matching 2x12 cab (h30s) and the Maz was simply better. Just as much gain, but tonally richer than the 2061x. I sold the Marshall two weeks later. I am not familiar with the 1974x though, seems like a killer amp.
