I replaced the JJ's that came in my amp with Groove Tube #5's.
Now i understand, much warmer, earlier breakup, more ability to play with tone and cut controls without getting harsh.
I love this amp!

If I am not mistaken, I read on Dr. Z webpage Tube Bias Notes that Groove Tubes' EL84S are made by JJ/Tesla

The GT EL84's are JJ's . Your amp was probably in need of a fresh set and you will find the Maz jr likes a fresh set about every 300hrs of use , more if driven hard .

Has anybody had any experience with TAD el84's, they seem a little pricey and are made in China, but in the reviews I've read it states they are a ROBUST tube, I'm wondering if by Robust they mean that They will hold up better in the tube torture chamber known as the MAZ 18 combo. My wife is buying me a new set for Christmas and I was going to pick up a set of Groove Tubes EL84-s #5, I've been using JJ's with good but not excellent resukts.

Guitar George, I have Maz 18 jr verb/1-12 (G12H).I have tried a set of TAD EL-84's. They sound very good. Ok, here comes the but...I still like the GT-EL84's (#6)better. The Gt's seem to have bit more output with just the right amount of hair. I am currently using the TAD higrade 7025 in the v2 and v4 spot. I am also using GT12AX7M's in the V1 and V5. I say give the TAD's a shot you wont go wrong. Rick

Got my TAD EL84-STR's in yesterday, installed them in my MAZ and I like them, very clear sounding tubes, very clean compared to JJ's and Groove Tubes, I have to turn the gain up a little more to get a good breakup but I really like what I hear, no harshness and very little of the weird overtones that happen when playing doublestops around the 12th fret, I did'nt hear anything rattling either. These are the best sounding tubes I have ever installed in that amp. I think they help me get into Fender territory a lot better than the JJ's did. The amp just sounds more solid. I'll have to try some TAD preamp tubes next. I would buy these again.

guitargeorge, everything you said about those TAD el84s is exactly what I want to do with my Jr. I ordered a set and can't wait to try them out. Hopefully it'll be just what I've been looking for.

Singlecoiler, How are you liking the #5's? Did they change the output volume much? Are you finding the amp less harsh? Where does the amp breakup now (Volume control wise)? I replaced the Sveth's that came in mine with GT#6's but I'm thinking I'd like to get more breakup sooner and have been wondering about the #5's [glow=limegreen,2,300]-J-[/glow]

OK guy's here's my 2 cents worth
put the new tubes in (listed in my profile below ) and I must say the amp is fantastic.... much more alive and the sustain is great ..my guess is that the SAG 12ax7m makes the difference for the sustain. I tried my Tele, Strat and 335 thru it. The amp seemed to have a little more mids with the 335 but in a good way.I still favor the 335 but may start to use the strat when I want that extra clean for certain songs.

Great to hear Albert,
I've had great luck with the 12AX7M's in my vintage Fenders so I may pick up some for the MAZ as well. I will definitely try the GT#5's since I am looking for more natural breakup from the amp sooner on the volume dial.
Thanks for the great review.
