I have been looking into buying a Dr Z amp for some time now and I'm unsure which one to get. There are no dealers close to my home so I've been going by what I've read. I like the Maz18 Jr NR for my needs whch are small clubs and 3-4 gigs/month. Classic rock, blues, some fusion. I like to minimize effects, tube screamer and a wah pedal is about it. I play through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe so I want a different sound. The other Dr Z I was thinking of is the Route 66. Anyone offer any advice?

My path to the Maz Jr started by someone pointing me toward Reverend amps. I started checking out Reverend and Soldano amps on the web. I eventually landed at www.harmony-central.com and started reading the user reviews. It seemed that most of the Reverend users that really liked their amps were Ampeg fans. I'm not an Ampeg guy and realized the Reverend wasn't for me. But, I noticed all of these other small amp manufacturers out there and started digging in. Long story short, after reading the reviews and listening to various amp samples and picking up a John Mayall CD, I became convinced that the Z was the amp for me. Luckily business travel took me up around Boston and I made a detour to Junior's Music in Connecticut, tried it out, and that sealed the deal. Check around the different forums and harmony-central. Find folks that are saying things that match your thinking. That will put you on your way and narrow down your choices if you get the chance to visit a shop with your amp.

I agree with GuitarZ that the best way to be convinced is to try one in person, it's really really hard for me to drop this kind of cash for anything without seeing and trying it in person. If you must buy unseen try to do as much research as possible, this forum is a great place to start. My Z story began about a year ago when I too was on a business trip and happened to walk into a Z dealer here in Canada. This store had several choices and I stayed for a couple of hours trying them all out, they were very patient with me. Finally the manager brought out his personal Z rig, a Maz 38 Sr head with a 2x12 Zbest Cab, and hooked it up for me to try, it rocked hard!! I finally settled this year on the lower wattage Jr with the Z Best 2X12 Cab. This is the first amp I have owned that I can plug straight into without any effects and play all night, but it sounds just as good with the effects too! I hope this helps. I recently replaced my fender hot rod deluxe with a maz junior. There is no comparison. Besides the fact that my deluxe kept breaking down the maz jr smokes it 10 times over in my opinion. I can get everything from country tones to big fat zepellin all plugged straight into the amp

Too many amps, too little time!!! My path to Z-dom started with a guitarist in my former band who had a rt 66. It always sounded killer, but he had to attenuate it to play in the clubs where we played, and he several times commented that he'd like to get a maz 18 someday then I happened to stumble in to the local guitar shop and lo and behold, there was a used maz 18 jr nr head on consignment, just sitting there staring at me between the eyes. traded in my old amp and some cash on the spot and it was mine! Of course I immediately had buyers regret, until I turned it on IMHO I think it is a perfect club amp for me, we play blues, rock, punkabilly, covers it all. Can't go wrong mjcycle! pull the trigger!

Listen to John Mayall and The Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton a.k.a. THE BEANO ALBUM. The RT66 is very close to what you hear on that album. I love it, Big, Fat, Saucey tones! It will make your little fender run for cover! Good Luck!

Thanks to all for your comments. I found a dealer about 2 hrs away and I've been on-line with them. I plan to try out both the Rt 66 and maz 18 NR before I choose.

My path to Zs started with a Vintage Guitar magazine a couple years ago, with Eric Clapton on the cover. From there I saw an add for Detemple guitars. I looked up the website, where he is a big endorser for Xotic effects. From there, I saw the Dean Parks video (a common start for us Z guys!), looked up Dr. Z, and decided that was my next amp. A few months later, I bought my 45 combo off eBay, before even playing through any Z. I never regretted it! Although I would generally suggest trying it out first. I'm on my third now, waiting for the SRZs to come out. Oh, and to mention, my last non Z amp was a Fender Hot Rod Deville 410. It's at my bandmate's house (where we practice), use it for practices. Still can't get it to do what I want. I still have that VG mag in my room. I flipped through it recently to find two adds for Dr. Z. That would have made my journey a lot simpler!
