I am considering purchase of a Maz 18 Jr. NR 2x10 combo. I use my Fulltone Tube Tape Echo (TTE) extensively in front of my current amps. But, the effect loop of the Jr. NR looks like an ideal place for it. I am also considering the Carmen Ghia, but right now the potential tonal versatility of the Jr. NR is swaying me in that direction. In the Ghia's favor, the simplicity of the controls may prevent me from endless tweaking and just concentrate on playing! But I am not sure there would be enough diversity for me.
The TTE works great in front of my existing combos, but perhaps the effects loop on the Jr. will work even better. Does anyone here have experience or advice on using the TTE with a Z amp like the Maz Jr. or Carmen Ghia? Thanks!

I don't have a TTE but I run a H&K Replex and Rotosphere through the loop on my jr. nr head. They are both much quieter through the loop than run in front of the amp. It's a really cool and useful feature I think.
The jr. has more knobs than a Ghia but it's not really a tweaker's amp. Seems like I dial it in a few places and it pretty much stays there. The tonal options, especially the mv are very useful.

The Carmen Gia does not have an FX loop and cannot have one I'm told ...

I know from back in the day I used to run my old Echoplex thru the loop on a Boogie Mark III. Less hiss and sounded better in the loop. Roland Space Echos will hiss a lot in the front of an amp too. I don't know how Setzer stands it. At least the Echo Plex stops hissing when you turn it off but the Roland hisses all the time. The hiss is then exaggerated by the treble control, bright switch and presence control. In a loop all the treble boosting has already been done so tape echoes hiss much less that way.

I asked Mike Fuller about this a couple years ago when the TTE came out... I wondered if I should get MAZ's set-up with effects-loops. He said he wouldn't know if running through a loop would be better because he had NEVER tried it. He had always used them in FRONT of the amp....so I didn't think about it anymore after that. And by the way....it sounds GREAT (and quiet) this way too. Get a MAZ Jr. and don't worry about a loop. Mark

The TTE is really quiet no matter where you run it. There is an advantage in running it before the amp.... it can give you a boost to your guitar signal and it warms the sound of your guitar at the same time. Right now I use it this way and really like it.

Part of the hiss on my old Echoplex and the Roland Space Echo may be the electronics. I always thought tape echoes needed a variable Dolby or something to cut the hiss. I imagine Fuller has got his down to being as quiet as possible with the newer technology.

I have had 3 Space Echo's and liked them all, but they do have more hiss than the TTE, and they color the actual guitar tone a little more. The space echo uses a special kind of tape, if you try to use standard tapes the hiss will be higher and the unit will not function as well. You can find good replacement tapes on the web. Mike Fuller has really done a work on the TTE, I just think its the best unit of its type ever made. I went ahead and bought 2 of them.

I consigned my Space Echo years ago. Alejandro somebody, pretty famous, bought it.

Okay, I took the plunge! I just ordered a MAZ-18 Jr. 2x10 NR combo yesterday. It will be black with chocolate piping and a tan grill. I am TOTALLY pumped! I use the Fulltone TTE a lot and will try it in front of the amp like I have been doing with my other amps (DRRI and a Swart Tweed Space Tone 6V6SE), as well as in the effects loop. When I ordered from Fat Sound, I specified the no-reverb option which apparently comes stock with the effects loop.
I can't wait to get my new Z!!! I was torn between this and the Ghia, so I hope I've made the right decision... ;D
