I've read about all the different settings for the MAZ 18's controls and all the combinations that yield different amp colors but recently I found what works for me, I set all the tones to the max and run the gain about 2 o'clock and just use the cut to set the overall tone of the amp, surprisingly it's not too icepicky and I'm playing a Strat type guitar. I think that running it wide open makes it cut thru better and with a pedal in front to give it some grit the amp kills. With the gain up to about 2 o'clock the amp just starts to break up sweetly when the vol on the guitar is all the way up and if I roll down slightly it cleans up real nice. I thought there would be too much bass when all the controls were up at max but the tone is pretty even and it's real easy to tweak in with the tone knobs of the guitar. I posted earlier about some weird overtones and a background hum that I got when I played certain notes but I switched the power tubes from JJ's to groove tube No. 5's and the amp doesnt seem to do it as much. After many months of fiddling with the tone stack of this amp (and there's some great tones in there) I decided that full out wide open is the way to go for me.

Had to admit when i first read your suggestion for tone settings, i thought it would be too much of a good thing. To my surprise i liked it very much. Maxing out the tones really thickens up the sound and while I've only noodled around in the basement, i would think this would help to cut through the mix more. Works well for single and double coils, still increase the cut for double coils though (brightens them up a little). Thanks for the suggestion, don't think i would have tried this on my own. Big sound! When the button comes back...+1. Bill

Funny thing, I was cranking the gain just yesterday and then I read this post. I'm convinced there isn't a bad tone to be found in the Maz Jr. <---period

Are we calling the volume the gain or the mater the gain?

It's amaZing how many (all) sounds you can get out of this amp, it seems to me it sounds even bigger with the master cranked and then use the volume for the overall level. but it really do sound great

I have a early 90's MAZ 18 jr combo 2/10's with reverb. The gain is the pre amp vol. First knob the master is the overall vol.
