Hey Guys, I finally jumped in and ordered a used Jr head (with verb), Blond with Salt n pepper grill, it should be in my hands by next weekend, can't wait. It's gonna be a long week for sure!
I am also looking for suggestions about cabinets. I think the Jr comes with 4 and 8 ohm outputs, does anyone know if it will support a 4X12 16 ohm Marshall basketweeve cab with vintage greenbacks? Would using this cab until a new one arrives damage the output transformer? Is this too much of a cab for this amp? Would a single 12 or 2X10 be a better choice? Any insight would be appreciated.

I believe the rule is you can use a cabinet with more resistance, but not one with less resistance.
I personally can't stand to haul a 4x12. Most of the clubs I play either don't have room on the stage for a 4x12, or the 4x12 is too loud....and too directional. On a small stage, a 4x12 will blast all the music past my shins, and kill the people in front....all while I'm screaming I can't hear myself. (thank goodness for beam blockers.)
I have a 2x12 combo and I like it, and I know a lot of Maz Jr owners in this forum who love the 2x10 cabinets (or combos)
But I will say this, a 4x12 w/ greenbacks is awesome. Big and heavy, but awesome.

A single 12 cab or a 2x10 cab would do fine, easy to transport .4x12 is awesome if you play on stage for large crowd.

Thanks for the responses so far, it's really appreciated.
I have a line on a used Marshall 4X10 1965B from the 80's with original Celestion G10L35's for a god price. Has anyone tried this cab with a Jr? Any insight as to the type of tone this setup would produce? Would it be well balanced or to focused, bright or dark?
Anyone??

You might look into the Avatar cabs ( www.avatarspeakers.com/) if you're still experimenting with setups - they're a killer bang-for-the-buck and you'll be able to get your money back out as you get a better idea what you're after. [I've had one on the road w/my Route 66 for over 3 years and it's been a flawless performer, highly recommended] Your 4x12 would be fine. Probably sound pretty cool too! Definately not a worry about hurting this amp - they're overbuilt and really stout/roadworthy. Here are a couple starter speaker suggestions: 212 cab Deep open back will give you the best of both worlds (full, tight bass but still a little airy character) Weber Silver and Blue (30 Watt Moderate Dope) combo [alnico will be a bit softer on the bass and chimier on the top end; ceramic will have more headroom, brighter top end and tighter bass] -or- Celestion G12H30 and Vintage 30 combo [same setup as the Z-Best cabs] Weber combo is less aggressive/smoother overall...articulate. Get you more of a Fender/Vox character. The Celestion combo is more aggressive. Turns the Maz Jr into a mini-marshall - nice grind, mid range and aggressive top end. Great rocker setup.

My Jr. is in the 2x12 combo setup from the factory. Sounds great! Occasionally, in practice or recording, I'll plug my speaker cab from my 4x10 Concert Reverb and it's really kick-arse as well.
Before I ordered with the 2x12 I played the 2X10 and didn't like the 10 sound as much---didn't seem "big" enough or ballsy enough for me. But the 4X10s do quite well and give it a little more of a rocker sound that's cool on some songs.

I HAVE A MARSHALL 4X12 LOADED WITH GREEN BACKS, HOOKED UP MY MAZ18 COMBO TO IT AT LOW TO MODERATE VOLUME AND IT HAD MORE TREBLE THAN THE COMBO G12H30. BUT I HAVE NOT USED IT TOGETHER PLAYING OUT YET .I PLAYED A 50 WATT JCM 2000 FOR THE LAST 7 YEARS AND THE 4X12 GREENBACKS WERE GREAT.

Maybe all that time with the 4x12 is why you're shoutin'! ;D

You really don't say what type of music you play....but in general, it's a fairly easy answer... For larger situations, get a Z-Best, and for smaller deals use a Z 1x12" Cabinet. For the Z-Best order Celestion Heritage G12-H on the bottom and a G12-M Greenback on top. For the single 12" Cabinet, try a G12-H or Blue, or Gold.... That said, I loaded all these Cabinets with Tone Tubby Alnico Hemp Cones and couldn't be happier! Mark

If you don't mind luggin' the 4-12 it should sound KILLER with the Maz. If the weight starts getting to ya, grab a Z-Best. For those of us that hauled 4-12's around for years the Z Best is a godsend. All the 4-12 tone in a smaller lighter package.

Thanks for the replies guys, I ended up buying the Z-Best with the stock Celestions in it, and couldn't be happier. ;D I would have to classify myself as primarily a blues guy but I dabble in all types of music, so I needed a versatile amp/speaker setup to cover all these tones. I did try my vintage Marshall 4X12 with greenbacks (too cool, and too heavy) as well as playing through my Fender Twin's speakers while I decided on the Cab. The twin has a ceramic and an Alnico which sounded really good too, but I really like the smoothness of the Z. [glow=limegreen,2,300]-J-[/glow]

Of course that does not mean I wont be trying other configurations of speaker sizes, speaker numbers, and cabinets! You know how it is when your a tone-aholic the quest is never ending [glow=limegreen,2,300]-J-[/glow]
