For my tastes, the alnico cream in this combo cab is chefs kiss. I can’t explain it but it just gives me the sounds I love. That being said the creamback was great too, but I think I tend to prefer alnico speakers in general. At one point I’m planning on snagging one of Jim’s alnico speakers from scumback

Master volume is at 10. I’m stacking fuzz into treble booster into Lightspeed at one point

Here’s some AC/DC. Maybe the only solo I can play halfway decent. Fuzz -> treble booster Compressor -> Lightspeed -> Strymon volante -> Strymon flint -> z28 mkii.
Z28 mkii volume at 11, treble at 1, bass at 11, master at 10. Guitar volume is at around 9-9.5 during the solo and rolled back to around 6-7 for rhythm at the end. Amp is clean if all the drive pedals are off

I get it guys, but really reading the OP’s post I would think that the Head would be more versatile or tunable to a ROCK sound. I too run the MKII in combo form. Mine also has 6v6’s, FX Loop and a multi tap transformer. LOL

Hey, everyone! So... contemplating between the head and the combo. Still not sure which, all depends on how I want to simplify my rig vs wanting maximum options... Sounds like others have you talked into the head. While the head would sound great through any 8 ohm cab, remember that it only has an 8 ohm tap. That said, the combo version of this amp is in the "Z-Master" sized box and is the most 3D sounding amp I've ever owned/heard. Sound comes from the front., back and a LOT of sound comes out of the oversized vent on top of the amp. It's truly something to behold...and to think about. Love my Z28 MkII. And it sounds great with all styles, pickups and guitars. Wellllllll.... Matt's Music has a special order coming in three weeks or so. It's still the same red cab, but with the Z Wreck grille cloth. That'll be mine when it arrives... 🤓

You won’t regret getting the combo. I’m a Z-28 combo lover from legacy days. I run my MKII at 3-3-3 and use the master to tame it to the room. I rarely use overdrive with the MKII; I ride the guitar volume.

I think you'll be very happy with the Z 28MK2 for hard rock. I use it , mostly through a large vertical 2 x 12. Sometimes through one by 12, and I find it one of the most versatile amps I've ever played. I find that it's kind of like playing through a big Fender. By that I mean, like a big brown amp. It has great cleans but they're not scooped. When we play Cream or the doors or Mountain or Jimi Hendrix I will use RYRA Klone, Mjolnir, OCD, Lightspeed, Barber Direct Drive, Jhs Morning Glory, Mythos Olympic, Fulltone Mas Malo, Wampler Ratsbaine, Jhs PG14 distortion.. so I go from everything from Clean Boost to peel the paint off the walls filthy. This Amp does it all! I might say better than any other amp .. maybe in my Maserati is better ha ha but my Maserati doesn't do the big fender thing. It's just amazing. The Z 28 is amazing too So I can make it sound like a Marshall or a Fender or a Dr Z beastly amp of doom. YMMV I hope that helps.

The cream back is definitely not my jam tho. It’s not bad but for straight up rock n roll, I get a better sound with a scumback m75. It’s soooo good. You’ll definitely need a pedal to get you the gain for hard rock but the sound is so good. And most people are using pedals anyway so who cares, right?? If I want harder rock sound, I use my OCD or my RYRA KLONE. Lately I’ve been liking the sound of a ge-7 with a flat eq and a slight volume boost….that makes for a great rhythm sound. But for me the game changer was swapping speakers. Creamback is too bass heavy.

Kind of like a V 30 but smoother, and a little warmer. My 2 x 12 has scum backs M75 and J75 My other 2 x 12 has a creamback 65 and a G 12–65.

I never put much stock in speaker selection but man did these make a difference. Tighter low end, sparkly highs. The midrange of the amp jumps right out. Really big difference. Cream backs are an acquired taste I think ….one that I haven’t acquired lol.

Germanium OCD... La Grange... Those should all be stellar into this amp. As far as gain, I’m running a Kingtone miniFuzz v2, R2R electric treble booster, Lightspeed, and nordland odr-c 30th anniversary. I’m maybe 2-4 months away from my king of tone

I use the yellow side of my KOT with Fenders, but rarely with Gibsons. I ride the guitar volume for overdrive The Z-28 MKII is just that good.

Do the cleans tend to hold up well at drummer/band volumes?

She's here!!! Haven't had time for pics or a proper rundown yet, but messed around a bit with cleans and got something really nice! No time or chance for tweaking band volume stuff yet. Only tried two pedals so far and seems to love the germanium OCD! The KoT will need some tweaking, but is naaaaaaaaasty with the clean boost!

Congrats. Looks just like mine. I put a Fane A60 in mine a few weeks back. I boost it with an Origin M-EQ. Nothing just smiles here.

Yep, that's exactly what mine looks like LOL!
I did get to turn her up a little more yesterday and it's amazing how pedals just sound like part of the amp. They do take a bit of adjusting, especially since I'm not using them over a light crunch. Got the KoT much happier than before and really tweaked the germanium OCD. Just need to spend time with these fuzz pedals! Like any other amp, she loves to be opened up!!!
