Hey guys, for anyone who's had a chance to try out the Galaxie, I'm a bit confused. I see there are two volumes, then bass / treble / presence. Is one volume a gain and the other a master volume? with the channel switch really just a serious boost? Or does each "volume" control the volume/gain on the different channels?
I own a 6545 - which I can obviously control the amount of gain on the 65 side, just wondering if there is that kind of flexibility with the Galaxie gain channel.
by the way, this amp seems right up my alley..... ahhh.... trouble!! (this is when you start lying to yourself that you afford both! ohh and that new cab you'll need too!)

Each channel has its own volume control, but they share tone controls. One channel is pretty clean, the other is high gain. No master volume on this pup - she be loud!

how does the volume compare to other Z's ? delta 88, maz 38, etc..
will I need to use my airbrake with it to get it singing?

Hard for me to estimate since I only played it at a music store through a Marshall 4x12 cab. My impression there is that it is a loud amp - probably on par with the Prescription ES. If I was buying a Galaxie, I would be planning to use an attenuator. Others may disagree, but we all do things different. YMMV.

awesome....
is the gain channel very saturated? or is it more of a raw grind?
did you try putting overdrives on the clean channel?? i wonder how it sounds..
can't wait till it comes in!!

No, I didn't get a very good preview because I was right in the main showroom, there were customers backed up and waiting for the poor sales guy, and here I am blasting over their conversations (along with their corresponding annoyed glances). I would have liked to spend a couple hours with it, but as it was I got about five minutes and decided I was going to get shot if I didn't give it a rest. The second channel definitely brings the goods though - very cool gainy sound. That channel worked great through that Marshall cab, but that cab wasn't particularly good for the clean channel. I'd want a lot better speaker setup if I had the Galaxie. I'm thinking something pretty flat would sound great, but I know the Doc likes his 10's for this amp.

Hmm interesting. Wish I could control the amount of gain - but hey there are always compromises.

I just got a chance to try out the Galaxie. My first impressions were very good. I tried the 2 x 10" combo.
Clean channel is killer! Like a nice cross between a tweed Twin or a 410 Bassman, without the overcompressed/muddy low end. Lots of glassy but musical top end and a woody, but not overly pushed midrange. I did not try any pedals into it, but if I had to guess, it probably is a better match than trying to find pedals that work with a Tweed amp.
The second channel was not what I expected. Nice British grind, almost as much harmonic grind as a treble boosted AC30. Lots of 2nd and 3rd order harmonics. I liked it a lot, but it was LOUD. Not a bedroom amp and would probably need an attenuator for small clubs. Still has that Z sound. Don't know how to describe it, but it sounds like a Z, only a completely new, Z!!
I can see this amp being the new king on the traveling blues circuit. Small, compact, versatile but BIG sounding. It would cover any small club gigs where the bar owner doesn't mind the player turning up and its loud enough to cover a large outdoor festival stage. It will easily hang with a Twin on the clean side, plus the overdrive is MUCH more musical than anything Fender is doing right now.

The dirt channel definitely has a nice grind, but it also very sensitive to pick attack, volume knob etc, and is very easy to coax singing, harmonic feedback from a note that was almost dead, just by wiggling the string. While that may or may not appeal to everyone, I love that kind of sensitivity to what you're feeding the amp. The clean channel is much cleaner than the dirt channel, but is sort of hairy from the git-go, and gets dirtier as the volume goes up. It pairs up nicely with the second channel. And yes it can be loud. (Ain't that why we play electrics? ) The amp simply put, just has pure, raw American attitude. It's another winner from the Doc.

I just picked up a Galaxie Combo from Richmond Music. I tried it out the first day it arrived then another time then another time. I was very concerned about the volume of the Second Ch. I left Richmond Music today with the Galaxie and an Air Brake. Set it up in my music room and I Love it. I also have a Maz 18 Reverb Head and Open back 2x12 with Greenbacks. The Air brake tames the volume lovely on the galaxie. I will be gigging the Galaxie Tuesday Night in a Venue that holds 250 people. I will be going blind with the Amp in terms of playing it with my band for the first time but I feel confident it will work wonderfully. Point is I suggest the Air Brake if you are wanting to or need to tame the volume. You will not be dissapointed in the amp combined with the Z-Break. If one is dissapointed I would be highly confused. Perhaps they should be com a Bass Player or better yet get a tamborine.

Continuous volume control. Selectable impedance. People who've compared it to other populat attenuators say it's the most transparent....

The Leash sounds cool, but I'm not too excited about the 120v required

Just took delivery of one of Doc's "GALAXIE 1X12 COMBO'S) from Elite Music Sales in Montgomery,AL. It took all of 5 minutes demoing the "Z-AIRBRAKE" with the Galaxie to take one home with the Galaxie! This thing works perfect and delivers the goods on attenuating the Galaxie to managable stage levels and most important for us weekend warriors to play at home! I am not going to try to give all kind of magical word descriptions on the Galaxie yet! But I will say this much that if you are looking for a 6L6 based amp that delivers big fat chewy cleans and a gain channel that doesn't need a pedal on it for BLUES,BLUES ROCK,ROCK and CLASSIC ROCK the "GALAXIE" nailed it for me! I was looking real hard at one of the Fender SUPER-SONIC 1X12 combos and the GALAXIE kicks that amp to the curb with no problem! I have been away from Dr.Z's for about 1-1/2 years! I am proud to say that I am grinning from ear to ear having another "Z" and I love the tones that the Galaxie puts out! Instant gratification! Doc has a winner with this amp! ;D Regards, Mac
