The eyes are off of one of Docs best and misunderstood offerings. Next to my Z28 the M12 is as amazing ,both of these aren't going anywhere. I’m running mine with a 2x10 loaded with Eminence RC’s.
Go out and grab them if you’re a Z28 Fan but want or need a different color to paint with.

I love my M12 head. I did the Steve Miller mod and love it. I use it at home, rehearsals, and take it with me as a backup for gigs.

My M12 is 2x10 combo loaded with an ET-10 and an Alnico Red fang. Great amp, mine's stock so far.

The M12 is a really cool amp. I liken it to an AC15 that doesn't turn into a mushy, spongy mess when you push it hard.

So I've got a 150 ohm, 10 watt resistor coming in the mail. It's gonna be fun!

Dave I’d play it a while with just that 5AR4 before changing the resistor. You might find it’s all you need to do. Mine came with one from the factory and according to the Doc it’s pushing 18-20 watts. It gives up little to nothing to my Carmen Ghias.

I never changed my cathode resistor either. I love it as is with the 5AR4 and my other secret sauce recto that I’ve told many of you about 🤫 Plenty loud and chimey. No need to push the tubes harder in my mind.
I really love the M12 for my applications. I’m partial to the ef86 anyway, but it’s just so much better than anything else in that wattage range (Fender, Vox, Z, new, vintage, etc).

Yeah, I was just going to try some different output tubes in it. I've got a range of Perry's tubes, and the ones that are in there right now run pretty hot as is. I've got a Fluke infrared thermometer and they're running around 350-375 degrees right now. I don't think that those particular ones need to run hotter. And it's really plenty loud for any band that I'm playing in. It really amazed me how much the extra voltage from the 5AR4 tightened up and put a great edge on the note envelope. Very cool, I like it a lot more this way. I'm going to roll some output tubes this afternoon and I'll let you know what happens. I may pull the chassis and measure the voltage drop across the cathode resistor while I'm at it.

The 5AR4 certainly tightens the lows a good bit. The added voltage brings a ton more brightness, chime, and crispness too. The warmth from the old 6n14n’s is welcomed to my ear. And I usually don’t prefer darker tubes

6n14n’s here too, but I have a pair of broken in older GT’s that sound incredible as well.
I love the RT66, and the Ghia, but I never plug them in because I know what I’m looking for and I’ve found it between the M12 and Z28.

I too have gone with the 5AR4 And 6n14ns through the 2x10 with the stock Z speakers. I'm currently using a second amp for a dual mono set-up And orange rocker 15 combo. It sounds so good to my ear with the wet signal going to the orange and the dry overdrive hitting the M12.

Mine's stock, and I plan to leave it that way. Paired with a Scumback H55, it's the meanest Princeton Leo never built. Paired with an Alnico Scumback, it's the king of the AC15s. But better. Plus it's dead quiet at idle, and makes a great stereo partner with either my '67 Band Master, or Swart Antares. Love this amp!

Y’all making me wanna get the 5AR4 thing and I just got it and love it with the 5Y3. Maybe if I feel like I need a bit more wattage I’ll try it then 😂

OK, I can't let that just lie there. I'm going to guess 5V4GA, .... or maybe 5Y3. And how come I never got told. Huh?

Hey, I’ve got an Antares as well…been thinking about an M12 for some time. Good to hear they pair well…although it makes sense that they would.

Hey, I’ve got an Antares as well…been thinking about an M12 for some time. Good to hear they pair well…although it makes sense that they would. Run them both together and the Swart tremolo completely changes character - less on-off and more warbly, if that makes any sense. The Antatres is a killer amp!
