TL;DR: New to me M12 in the house and it is AWESOME!!!
Here’s the whole story for anyone interested:
——————
I had a couple of M12s years ago. One a combo, another a head. Decided too fast they weren’t for me without giving them a proper chance. Fast forward to last year when I got a good deal on a red combo. This time I was able to spend more time with it and I’m so glad I did.
This go around I learned two things:
1. I love the M12.
2. I really like the Z amps in red.
I know it’s billed as a pedalboard player’s amp and a high headroom platform. But it is my proclamation that everyone needs to try an M12 cranked to the edge of breakup (and further). Something about it is just magical. If you need to, get yourself a Brake-Lite, add your desired level of attenuation, and rock out. It really is that good.
So, now I found myself a really awesome amp, but I had to let it go due to some financial woes. That one was tough to let go, not only because of how great I found the M12 to be, but more so because I didn’t know if ever see another red one.
So, about a month ago I fly to FL to visit my folks. I hadn’t seen them in almost 2 years dues to the circumstances of the world. Prior to leaving I had been in contact with someone selling a red M12 head. I mentioned I was interested, but I was heading out of town to visit my folks in FL. Happenstance would have it, he was traveling the east coast, a little less than 2 hours away from where I would be, that same weekend. He told me he would bring the amp along on the flight (a chartered jet) if I wanted to meet him.
Got to Florida and made plans to meet up for the amp. It was noted to be in excellent condition, but when I got there to see it, there were a few blemishes (as I noted in the FS thread where I sold it). At first I thought, “it’s red, it’s an M12, who cares.” But once I got back to my parents, that was all I could see. I really hate my OCD sometimes. So, that was why I listed, and eventually sold it here on the forum. Again, I was disappointed and sad. Then something happened.
In my listing I has somewhat jokingly made a statement about wishing there was a red with Wreck cloth M12 for sale. Well, guess what? Shortly after I sold the above mentioned amp, I found one for sale! It was such a crazy thing, as if I had willed it into being.
So, after all of that (and this epic of a post), I finally have my M12 setup red with Wreck cloth. I really love this thing. It looks amazing and, even more important, sounds phenomenal. Easily within my top 4 Z amps ever. Severely underrated within the Dr. Z lineup. If you have never tried one, or if you were like me and never gave it the time, you definitely owe it to yourself to try one out through its full range of tones. Trust me, you will like it.
Here it is. The head has what would have been the stock tube compliment from 2016, which includes the 5AR4. Somewhat confident they are the original tubes. The 1x12 speaker cab has the stock Celestion Creamback G12-M 65. I may swap tubes to see if I can’t coax some lower headroom (I may have a 5Y3 somewhere).
I absolutely love it. Thanks for this one Doc!
