Had an audition for a gigging jazz outfit earlier this summer that I got thru (declined because it’d have been too much of a time commitment, this guy keeps busy w a lot of private gigs)…and ever since I’ve been practicing all the jazz stuff from college. Charlie Parker omnibook, mick goodrick’s book, transcribing solos and comping w records…but really been focused on solo Joe Pass stuff. Let’s just say my right hand is wayyyyys away from when I was studying classical in college lol.
Anyways 90% of my practice time is just 335 straight into the CG, vol at 10 (rolled back on guitar) and tone at 1:30. Man I wish I had this thing in college before burning out. It’s so much more satisfying than all the fender’s i was playing w back then. They all sounded sweet in practice but kinda wimpy in a mix. Not even going to talk about polytones lol.
I wanna get some good jazz gigs and get it out there. Skill is still a long way off but I know this thing is the ideal jazz amp. I’ll try to get a clip up later today or sometime soon.

The Carmen Ghia is such a unique and yet familiar sound…..it really sounds good with P90’s, as I am sure I sounds great with Humbuckers too. The only thing I see limiting it’s use in Jazz would be the overall headroom. As long as the gig is of moderate volume it will be fantastic, however if you need more headroom at BIG volume, it may be too hairy sounding for most Jazz.
My ear plays better than my fingers…..I just keep practicing.

my favorite part of the Ghia is that it doesn't take over your guitar tone. You can switch between guitars and the Ghia does a wonderful job of following along and letting the voice of you guitar come through. I love this about the Ghia. Todd

But frankly a lil hair is a good thing. Never like the sterile clean tone or the blanket over the amp sound.

Well it’s not that often here that someone talks jazz (seems to me anyway), but your application of the Ghia to a world dominated by foam grill cloths reminds me of how I approach an amp. Try stuff and if it works use it! I found that the Mini-Z with attenuator applied at lower volumes (usually not when you attenuate) gave a beautiful jazz tone with an archtop if you just want quiet playing. I use Z-28 for the same thing and it’s even better. And yes I have used Deluxe, Vibro-Lux, Super Reverb, etc....they are wonderful amps I just like my Z’s more.

If Julian Lage can cut it with a tweed Champ, you can sure bet a Ghia can get it done and then some. A fine choice in my opinion.

I've been using a Ghia with my big band, it works great. It's sweet enough for comping and hit it with a good drive pedal for solos.

Howdy,
Some day it will be said that Mike Zaite's Carmen Ghia is the Stratocaster of Guitar amps. I won't part with mine.

Some sloppy jazz but I like how it sounded. Used different settings than the I mentioned in the OP…air brake is on 3, vol at 1:30, tone at 12:30. Also had a barely on strymon deco in there.

This is really interesting. I wonder how the Mazeratti would work in similar applications. I loved my Maz 18 and got a Maz 38 Studio with the intent of swapping cabs. I loved the extra head room in the 38 and that much more sweetness on the low end of the Master Volume range. This has had me thinking that I might go Mazeratti when it comes time to get another Ghia. Your experience with the lower gain range of the Ghia has me thinking of a Mazeratti and getting a Master installed. Hmmm...

I rent the other half of my duplex to my uncle who’s also a certified guitar nut that happens to own a Mazeratti. These are my first notes of the day, it’s sloppy as hell, why I decided to do this cold is beyond me lol…and w different speakers so not exactly apples to apples. I had higher hopes truthfully. Vol 9:00, tone noon, w same strymon deco. Just a different sound entirely…not bad but more dirt than the ghia, even at relatively low volume.

If your really interested in apples to apples, you may want to see what’s preamp tube is in v1 in both. I found out of any amp I’ve ever tube tube tested the Ghia is really responsive in the amount of gain and how it responds with the tube in that spot. That and the speaker might get you closer to the cleans your looking for in the Mazeratti
