I recently watched Doc's last "ask Doc" video and one of the questions was about amp pairing. So, I thought I'd would create a post about pairing the Z-Wreck Jr. The best pairing so far has been with my Z-Lux. I have both amps set up differently, but still using the same pedalboard. I have the Lux set up for "just breaking up". I then boost it with my overdrive pedals. The Jr. is set for more overdrive. If fact, it's up around to around 2:00. That gives for some great British overdrive. For solos, I boost it with a Tumnus. Here's the set up so far: Polytune (with buffer) - Xotic Wah - JHS Double Barrel - Wampler Belle - MXR mini Carbon Copy - Boss CE-2 - Radial Bigshot ABY - amps. The Lux gets the signal straight while I have the Tumnus and Flynt after the ABY going to the Wreck Jr. I have the ABY, Tumnus, and Flynt on a separate board. The rig really works well. Great American and British tones while taking advantage of the best the amps have to offer. For instance, I use the on board reverb, tremolo, and boost in the Lux, and the wonderful natural overdrive and dynamics of the Wreck Jr. Now, am I gonna lug this whole rig around? I might!

Hi Russell, I bet this rig sounds great, I like the idea of using the Jr and a lead channel!! Great sound pair of amps!! Todd It could be done that way. I was thinking different songs. For instance, “Rocky Mountain Way” would be the Lux, and “Feel like making Love” would be the Wreck. What amp gets me to the song the closest?

Hey Russell, I have a Nova and Zwreck that I sometimes pair in my basement, which sounds pretty good but is way too much for the small places I play. I do have a question, I see you have a Tumnus and Belle, just wondering if you could give me some insight into the differences of those two pedals as I am thinking of trying one. Thanks

They are very different designs and have a very different feel. I would say that the Belle works well with just about any amp. I set it with a little overdrive to push amps into more overdrive. It's what I would call a neutral pedal, which means it shouldn't change the sound of the amp very much, where a Tube Screamer really changes the sound. The overdrive is open and a little compress based on the the side button setting, but not as non-compressed as the Tumnus. The Tumnus is a bit more controversial for me. I only like it with certain amps. In my case, I like it with the Z Wreck Jr, the Carmen Ghia, and the Therapy. I can't stand it with my Lux or Cure and haven't tried it with my Maz's. I don't really turn up the overdrive on Tumnus. I turn up the volume to get a volume boost to get an overdriven amp to give a little more for solos. The overdrive on the pedal is very non-compressed. Here's something else. The Morning Glory side of the Double Barrel is great with all amps. It's very neutral and can be set to get the most our of your amps.

I’ve posted this before, but my zwreck jr runs with a pair of ten inch Scumbacks… ones a greenback design, the other an g10h30 anniversary Celestion clone?)
I love the attack of that amp and run it dry. My effects all go through what is essentially a Vibrolux reverb with 2xTT Alnico reds.
At the moment I’m using an Earnie ball volume pedal that switches to pan (from one amp to the other). It’s just killer.

Z-lux seems like a great pairing with the jr, whether going back and forth or using the jr as a "drive channel". I have a Nova and jr and they are similar enough that I dont think it would be worth the trouble, but perhaps using Nova for cleans. Gonna be trying an American ALNICO (WGS G12A) with my Nova soon which will likely push the amps apart more soundwise. Will be a tough call cause the 12H30 sounds great and has beat out my speaker comparison thus far.
