I had a spare road case that used to house my Z Wreck combo sitting in storage and I had a hair-brained idea to get Mather to build a 1x12 to fit it. It's in the style of Doc's convertible with the three piece back. It arrived yesterday and I dropped a gold into it. Sounds better to me open back but I still want to try an Eminence Red Fang to see which works best.

I’ve been thinking of swapping the v30 that came with my Z 1x12 for a gold. How do you like the gold vs other speakers with the Route?

Until I try my Red Fang I can't compare it but I've played a Route through a Z Best, Doc's 1x12, a gold and a 2x12 with Greenbacks. All have their sweet spot. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite at this point though the gold in this cab open-back certainly sounds good!

I"m probalbly the only member that doesn't like the gold, but I do really like the Red Fang. I've hung on to 1 Alnico and 2 Ceramic Versions. Between the Ceramics and the Alnico it would be hard to choose, I just use one of each. I still need to get a 2x12 cab.
Nice looking 66, I love my two dearly.

I'm hoping I can bring this one (#5) back into the stable...

So far, I haven't liked the Gold with any of my amps. It sounds OK with some, then the more I play through it, the less I like it. I've never tried a Red Fang. Might need to check one out.

I dug the RF right off the bat. The 10” was just as tasty and adds some muscle. When they got expensive I bought a ceramic and was pleasantly surprised just how close they were in tone, and feel. Ceramic is a touch tighter which I liked.

Larger in all directions except width and then only by 0.25".
Z 1x12...19.5" H x 22.75" W x 10.25 D
This one...20" H x 22.5" W x 10.5" D
Does it sound better / different? I didn't have the two cabs site-by-side but It sounded wonderful with the Gold and the middle portion of the back removed.

I used to do the R66 + 1x12 gold… what a glorious sound. I greatly miss it.
