So I find a beautiful "LOADED" Body on Reverb (link to the post below). MJT bound body. I had a MJT that they built and put together, it had belong to Josh Scott of JHS. I loved the build so I know the body would be good on this. What really got me was that it had a Curtis Novak Fat Tele pickup. When I built my Jazzmaster I got my pickups from Curtis. He was great, insisted we have a phone conversation so he could make the perfect set of pickups for what I wanted, he totally delivered. I have a great Warmoth Tele neck, I will be rocking right away when this gets to me.
However, that's not what happens. Body comes, I get the neck on no problem. String it up, set up, playing nice. Time to plug in. Over all the pick up is a little weak, but the high E string is giving no signal when plugged in the Maz. I even tap the poles with a screw driver and nothing from that one pole. Some emails to Curtis to ask him about this and he invites me to send it in to him to look at.
I am communicating with the seller about all this. He agrees to at least cover shipping to have it looked at, hasn't yet agreed to pay repairs. Fair enough.
I removed the four mounting screws to be able to remove the bridge to access the pickup. Before I pulled it I loosened the three mounting screws holding the pickup to the bridge. The top of the pickup would not fit through the bridge. Stumped as to how it got in there the mystery was solved when I lifted the bridge up. Looks like the brass bottom plate of the pickup had been removed in order to squeeze it through the top of the bridge plate. I held the pickup together after I had it out and tried a few angles, no way this pickup got in the bridge while still being together.
Now the issue is two fold. Even if I have the pickup repaired and get that covered by the seller this pickup is not going to install into this bridge. In my view this is not a loaded body. I'm willing to eat my time and inconvenience if it were a matter of the pickup repair and the seller pays for that. But I'm still not going to be able to put this thing together without a different bridge. If I didn't really like the look of this guitar I would start the Reverb protection process right now.
I would love to hear what some of you think about what might make this right. Or do I just box it all up and send it back? Ugh.
