Howdy,
Assuming one's amp doesn't have a 1/2 power switch, is removing one of your amp's two output tubes safe for your amp and accomplish the same thing?

Lower decibel speakers are a good option. Which amp specifically do you want to remove Tubes from? I think it matters.

Doc's amps are designed to run with all the tubes he puts into them. Do NOT pull tubes and attempt to run your amp - it is not safe.

This is what the Z Air Brake or Brake Lite was made for. It reduces the amplifiers output level to the speaker.

As some above have said--using a less-sensitive speaker (lower dB sensitivity rating) will accomplish this, at least partly. Properly using an attenuator will do so, also.

Howdy, Assuming one's amp doesn't have a 1/2 power switch, is removing one of your amp's two output tubes safe for your amp and accomplish the same thing? Do NOT run your amp shy of power tubes. If you go with an attenuator set it up with the volume level you want with the attenuator on, then work on getting the tone you want. If you try just running your amp and adding the attenuator to that you may not like the sound. Get the system set up and then dial it in!

NOTE, and this is very important: This only works on push-pull, fixed-bias, Class AB amps with 4 output tubes. For example; Fender Twin Reverb, most Marshall 100 watt models such as a Super Lead. You may remove 2 tubes. Either the outside pair or the inside pair. If you do this you will also need to double your speaker impedance load for the transformer to be correct. You should check the bias to insure it is still correct also. I used to pull 2 tubes and disconnect one speaker in my Twin Reverb at times which effectively turned it into a Pro Reverb which is about a half power reduction. With proper biasing this is a totally safe method to reduce output.
DO NOT do this with a cathode biased amp. Most Dr Z amps are cathode biased. As has been recommended go with an attenuator.

As mentioned before, lower efficiency speakers, as well as an attenuator, would help. Understand that half power in an amp provides only 3 db of gain reduction, so that is a fairly minimal solution by itself.
