Where else will you get this kind of service in this industry?

Where else will you get this kind of service in this industry? Nowhere, I'm sure. One of the reasons I'm really looking to get my hands on a Dr. Z. I highly respect this. It kind of blows my mind that the person who builds amps for people like Joe Walsh actually lends a hand to a small name player like my online. Awesome, big thanks for that and also a big thanks to everyone here who helped me with this!

Tube options, really variable Bass, Middle, Tone….big sound and a great master volume.

But even if I can't get it worked out with the Therapy, I will continue my quest for a Dr. Z and I'm sure I'll also be really happy with something like the Maz or Z-Wreck Jr. We'll see were this road takes me, at least I got some really good help from the Doctor himself and now I learned I have this great forum to get me to the Z

We’re all interested in the issue and backstory. It beats watching political news.

Unfortunately I'm having a bit of bad luck so far. Sorry you are having trouble with your amp. Based on your video comparison, obviously something is not right at all. My 2 cents is return it, tell them something is not right with it, and let them figure it out from there. I have a bunch of Z's and if they share something about them, it's that they are alive, quiet, and harmonically complex. Yours is not that an obviously defective in some way. Also note they they are all burned in and ear tested at the end, and there is no way an amp would leave HQ like that. Let the dealer deal with the problem.

I'm glad to have had all your support here so far. Somehow I didn't notice it straight away, so I have the idea that it's an issue that got worse the more the amp got played. That's what probably threw me off in the first place. Usually I have a pretty good ear for sound, but when an issue gradually increases, it gets difficult. Next to that I've been trying a lot of amps lately, which can cause a bit of tone deafness. When I did the recording while tube swapping, with the Origin as a reference, it was pretty clear to me though that this had to be a malfunction
Still, when playing by yourself you can get fooled sometimes. When I switched to Marshall plexis a few years ago I had to get used to the sound. These amps are still amps to me that can be hard on the ear when playing by yourself. With a band or in the studio they work great though, cuts through everything. I played a Victory V40 Deluxe last year which I borrowed. Sounded good enough when I played by myself, but it was nowhere when the band I was doing session work for kicked in. Still a lot of players seem to enjoy those amps, although I mostly see them pop up in Youtube demo's. In that context I understand their use, but not for gigs. So part of me was scared that I would be the only one hearing the issue before posting my video. Luckily that's not the case.
I'm also really curious what the issue will turn out to be... and if I'll ever find out. So far I have only build pedals and did trouble shooting on them when needed. Tube amps are a totally different ballgame. I wish I would've had the right rectifier tube at home, it bothers me that there's still one tube left which I couldn't check. Or if it could've been the transformer, since the issue might've happened gradually. If the amps hasn't been used for six years, maybe that gave up pretty quickly. The box the amp came in and the inside of it looked like the amp had been sitting in storage for a long time. But that's all just wild guesses, if even the Doctor himself doesn't know, how should I.

I really hope you can land a new Z amp. Please don't go sour on the Therapy due to this unfortunate experience. I've got a Therapy and it's just a great amp. I'm fortunate to own a lot of Z's amps, and haven't been playing my Therapy much lately. But I got inspired by your posts and this morning I hooked it up to a 2x10 cab loaded with a 10" Gold and a Celestion VT-Jr. It sounds incredible and I love that amplifier. mine doesn't sound anything like the one you got, so don't give up on it. There are lots of good tweed based tones in there and it's got a great master volume. Good luck with the return, I'm sure that working with Doc you'll get a good response from the dealer you bought it from. Why he's selling a six year old amp as new is beyond me, but Doc will help you see it through.

Why he's selling a six year old amp as new is beyond me, but Doc will help you see it through. Don't worry, I won't go sour on this particular model and especially not on Dr Z amps. If anything, the response of the people here, the employees of Dr Z and even the Doc himself only made me like this company way more. I was already really set to score a Z, now I completely have my heart set on one. Years ago I discovered Dr Z through video's of Audley Freed playing with the Black Crowes. He had an amazing sound and I started searching what that amp with a Z on it was. Then I saw and heard Joe Walsh using them and they sounded equally great. They kept popping up. When I started looking for new amps, I checked a lot of different demo's and models. Peach Guitars do great demo's on Youtube of Dr Z amps, Jack Griffiths is an amazing player and knows how to showcase each model. That's when I was sure I needed a Z. I actually sold three of my amps the past weeks, because another store supposed to have a Z-Wreck Jr and a Therapy head in stock, with a Maz coming in. So I didn't want to miss the opportunity and put a few up for sale. When I drove there, they couldn't find the first two amps and the new shipment was delayed, so I was only able to try the Z-Wreck Jr combo, which was great. I was really looking for a head though. This week the Therapy I have now popped up at another store in a sale, so I jumped on that, and we now all know how that turned out so far. So I've been a bit unlucky, but I really hope that's about to change in the near future. For the next few months I have three productions lined up I have to work on and I have a lot more work coming up. That's why I wanted to diversify my amp line-up, and I'm sure a Dr. Z amp will be the perfect workhorse to make it complete. And I'd love to support a smaller company who is this engaged with their costumers and products.

To add some resolution to this thread: Obviously the amp was returned to the dealer. They didn't know what the issue was and needed to transfer it to some service center, which would take a couple of months. It just didn't sit right with me, so I went for a refund. Next to that I went with the advice Dr. Z gave me personally and contacted a licensed dealer he recommended, who I've been in touch with. I just bought a Maz 18 head from them, they got it in today, so it will basically go fresh from Dr. Z to me. Really looking forward to it and I guess there will be some new threads
