I’ve been wanting a Maz 18 ever since my old band mate had one and raved about it. I wasn’t playing with him at the time, but he was pretty insistent I check it out for the perfect gigging amp, and he’s a picky bastard as well.
I went for a new Maz 18 Jr Reverb head, because I use the Ox Box more and more, but also want to use this Alnico Cream speaker I have laying around. The first impressions are.. What a very balanced amp. Most amps either have too much bass, or can’t dial out this or that, not this amp, its super versatile with all the knobs giving and taking away just the right frequencies. It’s VERY quit, hardly any noise cranked, and no hum, even with the volume dimed. It has the most headroom and best clean tone of any EL84 amp I’ve played. This 18 watts seems like 50 watts, but the master volume is the best I’ve heard also.
Anyway, just wanted to share what stood out the most with the amp on the first day. Also this is a very well built amp with so much attention to details. They even put hot glue in the tube shield tops to keep the springs forever inside. Everything feels super solid and high quality, very impressed. Anyone that watches them Dr Z videos knows how dedicated and passionate Mike Z, Dr. Z, is about his products and craft, and it shows. Thanks Dr Z.

Great choice. One of the really great pieces of advice I heard around here is “ set the EQ with your ears NOT your eyes”. Coming from other amps it was easy for me to set the EQ where I thought they should be (as usual), but I definitely found that they can be at odd places and be getting exactly what I was looking for at that time.
Hopefully you enjoy for many many years. It’s a best seller for a reason.

You are going to especially love it the first time you get to use it on stage where you can open it up and see how well it sets in a live mix. Welcome to the forum.

“ set the EQ with your ears NOT your eyes”. Great Advice! I had the same set up for a long time at home which was Maz Jr into Randall IsoCab with Greenback. I refined my EQ and really liked it. I've had my UA Ox for a few years now. I was finding I wasn't warming up to the Maz and the Ox despite the variety of cabinets. I finally realized I was trying to make my IsoCab settings work instead of just listening to the tone and fiddling with the knobs and using my ears. Old habits are hard to break. I was able to dial in some nice tone. Enjoy!
