I usually run OEM JJ’s in my Ghia, as they just sound awesome in that amp. However, I’ve used and enjoyed the 6n14n in a Matchless Lightning clone in the past and liked them a lot with that circuit, and their touted ruggedness and longevity is very appealing to me, so I’m considering buying a set to try out in my Ghia... My question is, tonally, how do they stack up against the JJ’s in a Ghia? Is there some compromise I should be aware of? Thank you in advance for any helpful advice guys!

Well, I don’t mean to kill my own topic before it ever gets off the ground, but I just found this info straight from Doc in another thread regarding the Ghia: “6N14N output tubes are much warmer than the stock JJ El 84, but I'm sorry the JJ 84 works perfectly with the design of the sweeping Tone control.” Most likely that makes the 6n14n a dealbreaker for me in the Ghia. Oh well, JJ’s are still relatively affordable, and they last a decent while in a Ghia, even when it’s frequently cranked to 11.

Information is available via search. There is some junk out there, but I’ve never had a problem ordering quantities of 5-10 pair from overseas. They are a great tube. Most builders will design amps for these at well over 100% plate disapation (vs 70% for other power tubes) so the added durability or military spec is worth it.

I wish I had a better answer. I know that 6n14n and el84 sound great in my Maz. When I had a Maz and Ghia at the same time I did a bunch of testing and swapping with preamp tubes, but didn't touch the power tubes. I forget what they were, but my last Ghia came running some fancy el84's so I left the power section alone.

There are some members here that have used the 6n14n's in their Ghias and loved them.

I've got a pair of 6N14Ns in my Ghia and I really love them. The Ghia is remarkable how it responds to different speakers or tubes. It can make a big, big difference.
FWIW, I like both types of output tubes in mine. But i stay with the 6N14Ns because they last longer and sound great.

I have 6n14n's in my Ghia and really like the amp. Haven't tried any others though.

I use them wherever EL84s are required. I don’t notice much of a sound difference between them and other brands but when it comes to longevity there’s no comparison.

I had one of my JJ's crack/break....30 seconds before we started playing an important gig. That really sucked. I think it took out the rec tube too.
I replaced them with 6n14n's. They took longer to warm up...which freaked me out a little at first. They seemed less compressed and more robust than the JJ's. A bit punchier. ....which is neither good nor bad...just different.

Guys, this is all super helpful! Thank you so much! Very rad.I dog durability and reliability (GREAT features in anything; that’s one of the things I like best about Z Amps, too), and a more robust less compressed tube is also very appealing to me. I’m definitely gonna pick up a pair to try.
I’ve long bought JJ from Eurotubes, and anything else from Mike at KCA... I see has the standard 6n14n for $53 a pair, which says limited supply on the site, and then a “super premium ‘EB’” version for $65 a pair... Does one version sound better than the other? Anybody have a trusted source for these? I think I read Perry R was the go-to guy for these here at one point... Still the case? I could try ebay, but really prefer going through a US vendor.

Hi PeachPhan I don't have a Ghia, but I 've dealt with Perry. He's a great guy to deal with. You won't go wrong with his tubes. Here's his Reverb store : reverb.com/shop/rogue-8Matched pair $49.
