Hi all,
I need to send in my Stang Ray for a checkup. I have been wanting to do the half power mod since I got it, but now am not so sure. I use the low input and two clicks on the brakelite for home (most times) and hi input with no brakelite for gigs (twice a month or so).
So, to those who have done the mod, is it quite different from the brakelite? I am no tone snob. Just wondering which is more practical for the above situations?
Thanks as always.

I donât have a Ray (sadly), or any amps with a 1/2 power switch but I like the idea of the power being modified in the amp. So 1/2 power switch for me. One less outboard piece of gear. One less thing to have a potential issue with.

1/2 power switch allows for great flexibilityâŚ.seems like a good start. Then you could assess your need for further attenuation.

I have one with the half power switch and it sounds to me exactly half as loud! I hope this helps?

Is there a Z that sounds very close to a Stangray that is lower wattage?

Is there a Z that sounds very close to a Stangray that is lower wattage? Not really, but the Rx Jr can get close but the best may be a M12 modded to the Steve Miller specs. This version was actually modded so that Steve could have something lower powered that approached his lovely Stangray sounds.

M12 is closer in âvoiceâ in that you really canât replace that EF86 first stage with anything else. Itâs a thing of beauty and so unique. But itâs a smaller sound for sure compared to the Ray. The RXJR is much closer in terms of âEQâ, or frequency response. Just a different feel with the 12ax7 stage. I play them together.
