I've been watching a ton of Corey Congillio videos lately and man, they've inspired me to learn and think a little more about what I am playing. It's kind of fun seeing how it all fits together. In this clip(clams included), I am messing around with the flat 3 and the 5 more so than the 1. Or at least that's what I think I am doing. I am not a technical player...just an old intermediate trying to feel my way around. Regardless, the PRS sounds great with the Maz Jr!! If you could hear it in the room!

man, saw your YT description and got all hot and bothered...all thru jazz lessons and college it was nonstop "YOU CANT PLAY THE ROOT" "NEVER START OR END ON THE ROOT" and all that crap.
i get it...starting on other notes gives lines more character and sound more interesting, but the root note will never, ever, ever sound bad. im killing myself right now trying to find this video of jack pearson where he talks about this same thing...if youre not familiar with him, jack pearson is one of the allmans guitarists who routinely cuts everyone's heads off with a squier strat. dude is an absolute monster...if the root's good for him, it's good enough for me!
...sometimes.
lol.

Mark. sounds great. been fun to watch and listen to you grow your playing by doing the hard work. you're living, breathing proof, practice pays off.

Thanks guys!!! I really appreciate the kind words.
Spencer, it was just a lesson for me to mess around with...the root is my usual go to. Like you say, it never sounds bad. Always a great anchor
Ian, working on it man...taking me some time but I play every night for a bit. Just learning slowly yet I want to cram as much as I can into my old brain before I get too old...haha!

Hey Mark,
in the spirit of trying to expand my playing and musical vocabulary, here's a video of me jamming over an E minor vamp with the usual clams but along with the minor pentatonic, the Dorian and the blues scale, i use a hexatonic (6-note) scale that is a variation of the minor pentatonic with the 2nd added. it's has cool form of 3 notes per string that can be repeated on successively higher strings. the second video is a quick "instructional" on how to play both the maj (add the 4th) and minor variations of this scale.

Good job, Ian. I love playing over minor progressions, it's inspiring.
