Thanks to Forum member Hubrex I picked up a Z-28 head. Smooth transaction and fast shipping! I've never had a Brown Fender or clone before, but my co-guitarist has a Brown Deluxe that sounds nice, so I thought I'd try Doc's spin on the amp. The bonus is that the valance matches the 1x12 cab grill that I planned on using with the amp. I don't have a Reissue Greenback to try in it, which I believe is the common stock speaker but have a few higher power Greenback-type speakers. First up was the M65 Creamback. I didn't care much for it. Next up I tried a WGS G12C in a light pine cab. This sounded much better to me. Next up was the Z12 in the Z 1x12 cab. It sounds really nice! I didn't have much time to play it, but I'll put it through its paces and maybe try a few more speakers just out of curiosity. This seems to be a fun and great sounding amp. I tried the 3-3-3 settings, but there's way too much bass. Dialing that back was nice, without taking away any of the goodness. To be honest, right now, my favorite settings are V=12:00, B=9:00, T=1:00. Big and clean!

Congratulations. The Z-28 is a great design. The Fender Brown\Blonde era amps are my favorites and the Z-28 fits well into that tonal spectrum. The popular 3-3-3 setting never worked for my playing style but you may find it to be usable matched with the right speaker and cab. My Z-28's tone knobs are always below noon. Have fun.

While I own a Remedy now, ive owned 2 Z28 combos, a 2x10 and a 1x12. 3-3-3 worked much better with the 2x10 for me. It was indeed too bassy with the 1x12, thru 4 different speakers, with any guitar other than a strat. Lots of great tones though!

Personally I hate the 333 setting, there I said it. The Greenback does sound great with the amp, but the V Type really allows the bottom end to come through better, and its not that much louder than a greenback. Also the Tone Tubby 40/40 is also a great choice. I run both 10's and 12's with the one that I had, and I will get another.

I'll concur slightly... in that I've never "loved" the 3-3-3 o'clock setting, but it's kinda cool for something. I like the Z-28 for it's fatness in the clean & semi-clean zone the best. And also yes, I always liked the '28 with a TT 40/40 ceramic speaker. That's a MONSTER combination--and freaking LOUD, too. Did I say it was loud? I don't know... I couldn't hear myself. Never tried it with the V-Type but that's a great speaker, it would be intriguing.

Looks like a fun amp, if I didn't have to haul it all over the upper-midwest.

I like it with 4X10s. Not a light amp .... Didn't Doc make a standard 4x10 cab at some point? I imagine one of those + a Z-28 head would be pretty monstrous (and loud!) and perhaps slightly more portable. (And more attainable/easier to find?)

Doc did have a backline 4x10 cab at one point. Definitely easier to find and lighter than a 4x10 combo. Mine was so heavy that I got a great deal on it from former owner! He did bring a couple of teenagers with him to unload and move i9t to the man cave!
