Wishing to order a new JJ power tubes for my recently purchased used Cure, but not sure what current rating to request from supplier. Existing power tubes in the amp include an APEX matched set of JJs with a tube current rating of 35. Does the difference current ratings reflect a difference in tone? I understand the Cure amp coming off the assembly line with JJ 6V6s. Do these power tubes have a specific current rating?

I believe he uses the JJ’s because they can handle higher voltage than other tubes.

I know Amplified Parts sells the Apex matched tubes, and also if I remember seeing correctly in the past that's where the Doc has procured a lot of his stuff. If you like the way the amp sounds with those power tubes then contact Amplified Parts and request that specific rating when you purchase. But the short answer it can have a difference in tone. Whether it would be that noticeable would depend on your ears.

"the short answer it can have a difference in tone." So, what difference will tube current have on tone? What would be the difference of a "35" current rating vs "25"? Thx for the assistance. I'm just trying to decide on what current rating to request from tube dealer based on its tone capabilities. cheers i

I'm not really sure there would be THAT noticeable of a change unless you are just playing for fun at home or recording. There might be a difference in how it feels. Like I mentioned before, I'm using NOS so I haven't really paid too much attention to current ratings. That being said, you could probably get one set of each and see what you like and then run with it. It's not going to hurt the amp.

Not sure what doc uses stock but Apex is very helpful and will answer any questions you have if you email them. Ive done it before and I second that suggestion above. AES is their main retailer. 6v6s are cheap. Maybe get two different values and compare them to see which you like.
Fwiw in my handwired Princeton, JJ’s have more of the scoopy Fender blackface thing. Higher headroom less mids. The EH 6v6’s are more mid forward and warmer. Better if trying to do the pushed tweed (tonestack bypass) thing.
