Others will confirm, but I've read you can use 5881 and even KT77 or 6V6 in the Therapy.

No idea you could use EL34's.. I love the way the amp sounds stock. I do like 5881's and EL34's. Thanks for the update..

You can use 6CA7s too, for a more "Eddie" Marshallish tone.

Just tried some current production Tung-Sol 5881s and they sounded excellent. It lets you open up the Therapy a little more without changing the basic tone.
Running it through a Z 112 cab loaded with a WGS Veteran 30.

I've run every octal output tube I own in my Therapy...my favorites were the KT-77 and the 6V6GT. Right now I'm back to stock 6L6 tubes.

Dave, I see from your signature that you have not had a Z-28 but your comment about liking 6V6s in the Therapy got me wondering. For anyone who has tried 6V6s in the Therapy and also has\had a Z-28, is there any similarity in the clean tones through the same speakers? I assume that they are quite different circuits and the V-1 difference is an important factor. Just curious and this seemed like an appropriate thread to ask this (even though it isn't in the Therapy section). I've never used anything but 6L6s in my Therapy figuring that I had the 6V6 thing covered by the Z-28.

I don't own a Z-28, but have been seriously looking for one for a while and I do own a Therapy. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't care for JJ 6V6 tubes in my Therapy. If that's what a Z-28 sounds like, or very similar I may stop looking. I'll stick with JJ 6L6's for now. Maybe I'll revisit the 6V6, but it will be a while.

I've never played a Z-28, and like you say it has an EF-86 in the front end, compared to the 12AX7 in the Therapy. It seems like that would probably make a big difference right there. I suggest you try some 6V6s in your Therapy, it puts a neat spin on the amp.

I prefer the 6L6s in my Therapy but I like knowing that there are other options that work with it. It's defiantly fun trying different power tubes in it so i get why people do it and may find something else they prefer.

The Therepy on paper was a dream amp for me. It just absolutely did not work for me, but absence makes the heart grow fonder. So as time goes by I keep thinking of dipping my toe back in the water.

What didn't you like about the Therapy? WHat speakers and tubes did you try?

Of the tubes I tried in the Therapy, the KT77s were my favorite - big, big tone still in the 6L6 zone, but “more.”

I've been running 6V6's for about 7 months to (sort of) halve power.I have a small rehearsal space and close neighbors,so I try to keep it down while still opening up the master to 2 o clock or better.I like it like this, but this amp has never dissapointed me.
Always good to know there are options though.

The Therapy is very accepting of tubes as I understand but tone-wise I've felt no reason to switch it up.
I just recently pulled the JJ 6L6GC's in mine out because I thought I was hearing a drop in output, and put in new JJ 6L6GC's and it didn't really do much to the output level. I also changed out temporarily the preamp tubes but put them back as it also made no difference and kept the new ones for spares. I did keep the new power tubes in it as it probably needed changed anyway and chucked the old ones. I think I'm just losing my hearing! I like the fact it's cathode biased.
