I bought rickyp’s Z-Lux over the weekend and have been playing it. I love how punchy it is. I’m still learning my way around it. I will probably get the updates, but as want to play it like it is for a while. More to come as I start my journey with the Z-Lux.

It's a great amp, I love mine. I gigged it a lot with my Big Band and it's got a big, full voice that cuts through the mix without piercing. It's loud without "sounding loud" if that makes sense.

I need to retube it. I had to put some older 6v6s in it over the weekend due to a hum issue. That fixed it right up. I do have a question, who many of you have gotten the upgrades? Right now, I love the punchy boldness of this amp. I decided to use a tube screamer and WOW, I didn't expect a loosy goosy tube screamer to sound so tight! I now see what I've been missing!

So the Z website says this about the Z-Lux upgrade:
Current Production Update (serial numbers before 4/19-DD.38457) Master volume update, voicing/EQ update, increased sensitivity, increased reverb, noise floor reduction Black/Silver switch (rear mounted, adjusts amp between a softer or firmer playing feel)
(includes complete checkup) $259.
The reverb now sounds much like I remember my Z-Verb did, it's full and splashy when you crank it and nice and subtle down low. The amp gets more gain as you turn the Volume control up...it has a great overdrive feel when it's cranked up. The Master Volume (which I thought was fine before) is improved, on the lines of the Cure level control. The Black/Silver switch is very cool too, it reminds me of the Speed/Comfort control on the Z-Wreck. And the noise levels are way better, plus it doesn't require a NOS reverb driver tube anymore. Well worth it IMO.
Z is amazing, he keeps pursuing tone and isn't ever satisfied. He always says his best design is "The next one". He reminds me of how Jeff Beck was so obsessed with his albums in the era of "Wired" and "Blow By Blow." Back then Beck almost wouldn't release an album that wasn't perfect. I get the sense that Doc is the same way with his creations...sleepless nights thinking whether or not the design is ready to release. Makes me wonder what he's thinking of right now.
