Ok it is a tube rattle to be sure. On new JETTA's I now use a different tube retainer that fixes that exact issue. It is a spring retainer from Amplified Parts P/N S-H141. Buy two remove the shark jaw retainers and install the spring type. I also super glue a tube dampener to inside top of the spring retainer this adds extra complete pressure on the top of the tube like your finger would. Also make sure the springs have a bit of tension by adjusting them and the lower mounting bracket. This simple cheap retro fit should solve your problems, and Mike should try it to. Thanks for that, Doc. I will do so. I assume I can do what you do: glue a damper inside the retainer. Do you recommend keeping dampers on the tube wall as well?

Yes leave the dampeners on the tubes. Z

Mike what you need as a combo to head conversion. Please see Notes from DR.Z thread. A Combo to Head conversion, is this something the Shop offers? FWIW I cant seem to find the notes on the DR.Z Thread!

FWIW I cant seem to find the notes on the DR.Z Thread! With the 3 times increase in Ply Wood cost and the excessive delays in my cab builders deliveries, no we are not offering and new cab sales at this time. Check with Mathis Cabs in Nashville for a head cab note : same size cab as the MAZ heads. Z

I rec'd the spring retainers on Saturday and swapped them into the Jetta. I glued the dampers into the top of the spring retainers, reseated the tubes and fired it up.
I am more than happy to report that the rattle is entirely gone.
I have JJs in the amp ATM, and I like the added upper register content that they provide. These work especially well with the big-bodied Gretsch guitars and my Fender XII, as there seems to be more detail. The Tung-Sols sounded fine with my Jazzmasters, but upper harmonic detail was never a problem with those guitars. The JMs similarly sound amazing with the JJs.
Thanks to everyone who helped with this, or paid attention to it. Thank you Doc, especially. Such a simple thing and yet the difference it made was great.

Yeah, this is brilliant and will work with all models to mitigate rattle, 6v6 or other. Loving this.

I "MacGyvered" my Jetta a week or so ago, but was too busy to test it. Finally got time over the past weekend. I still hear a tiny bit of rattle from one tube, but I can live with it. Plus, I have lots of spare tubes! The retainer clips are very clever. Amplified Parts also sells a thin ring that fits exactly under the top cap and does what Doc did with gluing in a tube dampener. One of the clamps did not have as much spring tension as the other, so I had to fiddle with it a bit and use a second ring. Also, per Doc's advice, I kept dampener rings on the tubes. I'm not positive if it was the intent, but the retainers have these extensions that perfectly grip a dampener ring. Glad I can fully enjoy my Jetta again.

I have to say I love this forum! I haven't had an issue with tube rattle yet, but modern tubes are definitely hit and miss. I went ahead and ordered the spring retainer. I appreciate the information! Seems like an easy fix.

I have yet to experience the "Rattle". I did buy the retainers so I am ready for the conversion.
