Hello
Happy new Z owner here. The subject says it all. Does running the amp in 7w mode work one tube harder than the other? How about the amp's overall power tube life while running in 7w vs 15w?
I love the way the voicing sort of changes between the two modes. It goes beyond just altering headroom imo. I've only had it for a few days now so I could be imaging things. Either way, I've found it to be a super flexible amp with lots of good usable sounds and plenty of volume on tap.
Thanks!

They both wear out at the same rate no matter if you run it at 7 or 15 watts. They are actually both getting "used" the same amount in either setting.

Welcome to the Forum! A lot of good people and information here! Unlike some other manufacturers Doc's half-power switch does not drop one tube out of the circuit so AFAIK, running in 7 vs. 15 doesn't change tube life of one of the tubes. I'm sure others will add their take on the issue.

Thanks for the welcome and for the replies!
The owners manual says "This switch will remover one power tube from operation for lower headroom, more power tube distortion, and increased compression".
So does that change anything? If I run in 7w a lot, there will be no benefit to swapping the 6v6's between positions occasionally?

No benefit what so ever. The manual is simplifying what the circuit is actually doing. It isn't removing the tube from the circuit, it is doing something else to remove it from "operation" so it is still getting worn out. If you want to switch them from time to time, it won't hurt anything though.

Hi ratherbefishing. Welcome to the forum. You could try a simple experiment. Play the amp for a few months. Get the speaker well broken in and some time on the tubes. Then have a friend swap positions on the output tubes without telling you. See if you notice a difference. Cheers DCarver

You'll notice Doc gave the thumbs-up to the posts from Marc and I - if he says we're good we're good!
