Greetings,
I'm in the market for my first Z and I would like suggestions.
Here's what I do. I play music that's a bit Stones-inspired and a bit Crazy Horse-inspired. I currently play through a Friedman Runt with my Les Paul Special, w p90s. The Runt is not versatile enough for me. I also do a lot of recording at home. I usually put a the cab in my homemade iso box, and mic it with a ribbon and 57. All to say, I don't need a really loud amp. I'm more interested in recording flexibility.
I have 2 models that I'm leaning towards, but I'm curious what yall would reach for first.
Thank you in advance.

I’m thinking something in the Maz line. Roscoe said the Maz 8 was one of the most used amps in his studio.

I'm thinking a Nova would do you proud. It's got a great filthy beautiful overdrive that is Tweed flavored and would do you well in the Stones vibe. The Maz is a great idea too, I've got a Maz 18 NR that really sounds good.

Welcome to the Forum. A lot of good information and people here. I think Ghia sounds about right. It is in numerous studios because of its versatility. Funny you should mention the Stones - Mick Jagger was recording at Brad Paisley's studio and liked the Ghia so much that they called Doc right there to have Doc send Mick a Ghia. Here's a good video talking about Ghia in a studio BTW - the Maz Jr. is Doc's Swiss Army Knife - there's a reason it's his best selling model ever.

I loved my Maz for versatility, as mentioned Swiss Army knife, mine was a mkI, but I am loving my Z-Plus. The Maz tone stack and its parallel single end design Class A operation give it a great variety of tone. The half power switch is great for playing at home. Give a listen to Carrjimi’s videos. He does a great job showing off its traits. Used it in the back line at a jam the other night and it sounded great, received compliments, and kept up with some loud players. Having said that, You can’t go wrong with the Maz either, especially with the mkII upgrades.

Great suggestions.
I'm hearing several MAZ 18 recs, some CG, and the therapy.
What's the word on the Wreck Jr?

Great suggestions. I'm hearing several MAZ 18 recs, some CG, and the therapy. What's the word on the Wreck Jr? All of the suggestions above are great. The Wreck Jr is a great amp as well. Somewhat Voxy in sound and very dynamic. It will go from clean to mean. In fact, it’s amazing how much smooth overdrive is on tap with this amp. I was able to do a little recording with it on an old 4-track recorder (my digital studio is not available at the moment), and I thought it recorded great. I’ll throw it into the mix as well.
